Williams Moves to No. 1 in Latest DIII National Poll

September 26, 2012

NEW ORLEANS – The women’s team at Williams College unanimously is the latest team to earn a No. 1 national poll position in NCAA Division III cross country by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). In the first three weeks of the national poll, three different teams – Middlebury, MIT, and Williams – have been voted the top teams in the land by coaches from around the country. North Central College is still the No. 1 men’s team in the country according to the poll.

Williams’ women vaulted from No. 7 in the previous poll after winning their home invitational, the Purple Valley Classic, last weekend. The Ephs (78 points) bested a 21-team field which included then-No. 1 MIT (83) and then-No. 3 Middlebury (87). Williams last won the NCAA women’s cross country title in 2004. It is their first No. 1 ranking since November 2nd of last year which was prior to the NCAA Championships where they finished third.

Looking at the travels of the top five men’s team this weekend, No. 1 North Central’s men travels to the Notre Dame Invite this weekend. No. 2 Haverford will compete in No. 20 Dickinson’s Long-Short Invitational, No. 3 Washington (Mo.) goes to the Greater Louisville Classic, No. 4 SUNY Geneseo hosts their own invitational, and No. 5 Bates will compete in Gordon’s Pop Crowell Invitational.

Among the top five women’s teams scheduled to compete this weekend, No. 2 Washington (Mo.) will join their male counterparts at the Greater Louisville Classic, No. 4 Johns Hopkins is slated to compete at Lehigh’s Paul Short Run, and No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will split between Pomona-Pitzer’s and Stanford’s invites. No. 1 Williams hosts an alumni meet this weekend.
