Deep U.S. Women's Field Set for 2012 ING New York City Marathon

2012 Olympic Trials champions Julie Culley and Amy Hastings and Olympian Janet Bawcom to compete in November 4 race

NEW YORK - (September 6, 2012) - A strong field of 2012 U.S. Olympians are set to compete in the 2012 ING New York City Marathon. Olympic Trials champions Julie Culley (5000 meters) and Amy Hastings (10,000 meters) are among the competitors, as is 10,000m Olympic team member Janet Bawcom, it was announced by New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg.

Previously announced women runners in the race include New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith. The men's field will include previously announced three-time U.S. Olympian and 2009 ING New York City Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi, four-time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman, 2012 Boston Marathon fourth-placer Jason Hartmann and 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials fifth-placer Brett Gotcher.

Nationally, the telecast will be available on ESPN2, online at WatchESPN.com, and - for fans who receive their video subscription from an affiliated provider - on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app. Locally, New Yorkers can watch the race on WABC-TV and 7online.com.

"We are honored to welcome a blockbuster field of up and coming American women," said Wittenberg. "Our Olympians Amy, Janet and Julie will lead the U.S. team and it will be a special treat to host "local" Julie Culley in her marathon debut."

Culley, 30, of Annandale, NJ, qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games by winning the women's 5000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in a then - personal record time of 15:13.77; she lowered that to 15:05.38 in her semi-final race in London to qualify for the Olympic final. This will be Culley's marathon debut. She was the 2011 USA 5K champion on the roads and the 2011 USA 10 Mile Championships runner-up. Culley finished second in the 2011 NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K on ING New York City Marathon weekend, and she ran the 2012 NYC Half in March, finishing in 1:13:31.

"It is only fitting I cap off the most memorable racing season of my career where it all began early this year," said Culley. "Beginning with my first half-marathon at the NYC Half in March 2012 was a year of firsts, including my first National Championship on the track at the Olympic Trials in the 5000 meters, my first Olympic Team berth, and now my first marathon. My "Road to London" started last fall with an exciting road racing season topped off with an incredible experience at the Dash to the Finish Line 5K and a personal tour of the ING New York City Marathon course on the women's lead truck. My connection to the Marathon and the City itself runs deep as a member of NYRR and an ASICS athlete, a member of the New York Athletic Club, training locally with the New Jersey / New York Track Club, attending Rutgers University and utilizing the city weekly for its resources, doctors, and therapists. I couldn't be more excited and honored to represent my 'home turf' on November 4 on the streets of New York City."

Hastings, 28, of Leavenworth, KS, also triumphed at the Olympic Trials, winning the 10,000 meters in 31:58.36. She led the U.S. women in the London 10,000 meters, placing 11th, just one spot ahead of Bawcom. Hastings took second at the 2011 Honda LA Marathon in 2:27:03, the third-fastest debut in U.S. history; she finished 15th in the 2009 NYRR New York Mini 10K (34:40) and sixth at the 2011 NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K (16:07).

"2012 has been the most incredible year of my running life," said Hastings. "There have been ups and downs to try and make the Olympic team, but that only made it better when I finally was able to race in front of the Olympic torch for the U.S. For me, there is only one fitting way to finish a year like this, only one way that can live up to the hype of the Olympics, and that is by racing on the shut-down streets of Manhattan for the famous ING New York City Marathon. It is a race I have dreamed about running for years, but racing my first one in 2012 just seems right."

Bawcom, 34, of Flagstaff, AZ, won the USA Championships in Grand Rapids, MI, earlier this year in a new U.S. record time of 1:24:36. After finishing fifth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in January, Bawcom qualified for the Games in the 10,000 meters, and she finished 12th in London in a PR 31:12.68. Earlier this spring, Bawcom won the USA 15K Championships in a blistering 49:41. She has run the last two editions of the NYC Half, setting her personal best of 1:09:55 in the 2012 race this past March.

Other top U.S. women competing this year include:

Michelle Frey, 29, of Minneapolis, MN, who placed third in the 2012 USA Half- Marathon Championships
Alisha Williams, 29, of Colorado Springs, CO, who finished fifth at the 2012 Olympic Trials 10,000 meters
Serena Burla, 28, of Falls Church, VA, the fifth-ranked American marathoner in 2012
Molly Pritz, 24, of Boulder, CO, who returns to the race after finishing first among American women in her 2011 debut

First-of-its-Kind Cardiac Research During Run for Heroes Marathon

First race to incorporate wireless cardiac technology during the run, monitoring the hearts of select runners and streaming the real-time electrocardiography (EKG) results to a physician for analysis

AMHERSTBURG, Ontario - (September 6, 2012) - The World Alzheimer's Day Run for Heroes Marathon (RFH Marathon), the official run for the War of 1812 Bicentennial celebration between Canada and the United States, will be monitoring the hearts of select runners and streaming the real-time electrocardiography (EKG) results to a physician for analysis. The Marathon is set for Sunday, September 23, 2012.

The monitoring device is called a cardiphone and it acts as a wireless device that combines cardiac arrhythmia monitoring and cell phone technology in one unit allowing for real-time transmission and recording of patient data files to a service center for timely analysis and physician attention.

The RFH Marathon has partnered with the Windsor Cardiac Centre to offer this technology making them a first to conduct research of this nature using the cardiphone during a marathon run.

According to Dr. K.A. Tayebi, director of quality assurance and sustainability for the Windsor Cardiac Centre, the Windsor Cardiac Centre is the only cardiac outpatient centre using this technology in Canada.

"We are leading Canada towards a healthier heart with experienced cardiologists using the most advanced technology on earth," Dr. Tayebi commented.

"From a research and medical progress perspective as well as from a sport performance perspective, real-time cardiac monitoring will enable us to better understand how the heart operates under various types of stress and endurance conditions which will lead to the development of new strategies for patients to minimize their risk and for athletes to improve their performance," said Tayebi on the technology.

Dr. Tayebi also noted that the Centre is Canada's first and only outpatient cardiac facility to be accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in Echocardiography.

The race director for the Marathon is excited to be showcasing this technology as his race.

"The RFH Marathon is always striving to deliver the highest quality run experience and the introduction of this ground-breaking technology, the cadiophone, provides athletes with the opportunity to see the effect, through an EKG, of the marathon on their heart," race director Chris Uszynski said. "To our knowledge this will be the first time this technology is employed in endurance sport racing anywhere in the world. In the not so distant future, technology like this will revolutionize running and the associated risks."

About the Run
The RFH Marathon is Canada's most southern marathon (Boston Qualifier), half-marathon, 10K and 5K run. It's one of the flattest runs in the world, with an elevation difference of 38 feet. The race follows the waterfront course along the Detroit River and takes in an 1812 battle reenactment with historic Fort Malden as runners proceed through the Fort.

The main event, the marathon and half-marathon, will take place on September 23, 2012 at 7:15am with the 10K at 8:00am.

On September 22, 2012, the 5K race will take place in downtown Historic Amherstburg at 10:30am along the Detroit River waterfront overlooking Boblo Island.

Proceeds of the race go to the Alzheimer Society of Windsor Essex for Caregiver Programs (www.alzheimerwindsor.com). Runners are asked to raise money through pledge forms and donations.

imATHLETE Selected as LA Marathon Technology Partner

Company's robust platform to handle 2013 race registration and data management needs

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - (September 7, 2012) - In just over a month, thousands of distance runners will take to their computers or mobile devices to register for the 2013 LA Marathon, set for Sunday, March 17. When they do, they will find a quick and seamless experience, thanks to the marathon's new partner, I Am Athlete, LLC, a technology company that is changing the way individuals, race directors, and sports organizations promote and engage in healthy lifestyles.

Fresh off a successful 2012 race that featured roughly 23,000 participants along the world class Stadium to the Sea course, marathon officials have announced their partnership with imATHLETE, whose technology will support the October 1st registration launch for the race. With another large field expected, the LA Marathon required a new technology solution that could support the event's scope, and selected imATHLETE because of its industry leading customer support and user-friendly technology that creates a quick, easy and socially driven registration experience.

"We are very excited to be working with the LA Marathon team and to help them expand upon an already impressive event," said imATHLETE CEO Jeff Matlow. "The LA Marathon is not only one of the most respected running events in the country, it's also one of my favorite marathon courses. This new partnership aligns both of our goals of growing the event and enhancing each athlete's overall experience."

Launched in 2008, imATHLETE remains at the forefront of event management technology. The company has successfully reduced the workload of its clients through a suite of unique productivity tools, including the ability for participants to edit their own registration, automatic verification of previous finish times and dynamic reporting tools.

The platform also brings a social element to the event sign-up process, enabling racers to personalize their profiles, and share race details and information with fellow competitors.

"When thousands of runners go to their computers to sign up for the 2013 LA Marathon, we want to be sure they're in great hands," said LA MARATHON LLC Chief Operating Officer Nick Curl. "This partnership reflects our unwavering commitment to the user experience, from sign-up to the finish line."

Currently, runners can use imATHLETE's technology to take advantage of the LA Roadrunners + LA Marathon special bundled package at www.LAmarathon.com, which includes six months of guided training with LA Roadrunners, along with entry to the 2013 race. That package is the only way for runners to sign up before the official launch of registration on October 1. The 28th LA Marathon will be run on Sunday, March 17, 2013.
