Why Do Men Like to Run?

by Coach Brutus Hamilton University of California, Berkeley
Nov. 19, 1956

"...It is one of the strange ironies of this strange but interesting life that those who work the hardest, who subject themselves to the strictest discipline, who give up certain pleasurable things in order to achieve a goal, are the happiest of men (and women). Runners are completely and joyously happy in their simple tastes, their strong and well-conditioned bodies and with the thrill of wholesome competition before them. Their lives are fuller because of their competition and their memories of their school days will be far richer. That's why men love to run. That's why they do run. There is something expressive, something clean and exhilarating, and something even noble about it."

Keith Conning: Brutus Hamilton was my cross country and track coach at the University of California, Berkeley in the fall of 1961 and the spring of 1962. He recited Carl Sandburg poetry at the Big Meet team meeting in Edwards Stadium in the spring of 1962.

There were no women on the team at that time.

The first CIF State Meet for girls started in 1974.
