DIII National XC Poll — Williams’ Women Takes Over as Top-Ranked Team

October 12, 2011

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday the week five results of the national cross country coaches’ poll for NCAA Division III. While the top three men’s teams are still the same after three weeks, Williams College took over the No. 1 spot on the women’s side after a strong showing at last weekend’s NEICAAA Championships.

AROUND THE POLLS

* On the men’s side, the top three positions remain unchanged for the third-straight week. Middlebury (No. 6) and Bates (No. 9) surge into the national top ten for the first time this year. At No. 35 Willamette returns to the ranks.

* Williams is the new No. 1 women’s team, leaping from fifth, a position they’ve held since September 21. Williams’ women finished fourth overall last weekend at the NEICAAA Championships, losing out only to Division I programs Boston College, Boston University, and Vermont. In the process, Williams bettered three top-ten teams from Division III including then-No. 1 Middlebury, then-No. 3 MIT, and then-No. 9 Amherst.

* Nearly every ranked team will be in action this weekend as teams gear up for the championship season. … The largest contingent of ranked teams will be at UW-Oshkosh’s Brooks Invitational, with many getting experience on this year’s NCAA Championship course … at UW-Oshkosh will be men’s teams (12 ranked) including No. 1 North Central, No. 3 Calvim, No. 5 Washington (Mo.), No. 7 MIT, and No. 8 UW-Oshkosh; ranked women’s teams (12 ranked) include No. 3 Washington (Mo.), No. 5 MIT, and No. 7 Calvin …
