NEW ORLEANS – On Tuesday, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its week six national cross country coaches’ poll for the 2011 NCAA Division I season. Another big weekend of head-to-head challenges prompted the nation’s coaches to rearrange much of the men’s and women’s poll. This was especially the case on the women’s side where Florida State takes over as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country and are followed by Washington and Vanderbilt. On the men’s side, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin are 1-2 in the nation for the sixth-straight week.
AROUND THE POLLS
MEN
* Oklahoma State and Wisconsin hold the top two spots in the poll for the sixth-straight week. The Cowboys scored wins over then-No. 15 Arkansas and then-No. 3 Oklahoma as the first-place team at the Chile Pepper Festival last weekend. Wisconsin captured a wide-margin victory over a heavily-stacked field at their home adidas Invitational last Friday. The Badgers topped 20 (!!!) ranked teams on the way to the title, which included bettering the likes of then-ranked top ten teams BYU, Stanford, Indiana, NC State, and Oregon.
* Now at No. 3, a season high is BYU who finished second to Wisconsin last weekend. The Cougars scored 120 points to then-No. 4 Stanford’s 125 for the runner-up spot.
* At No. 9, Princeton is in the national top ten for the first time since at least 1998. The Tigers were fourth at the Wisconsin meet.
* Only receiving votes last week, Texas zoomed up the poll to No. 11 this week. The Longhorns finished sixth at Wisconsin’s meet, but were rewarded for besting 16 ranked teams.
* Eastern Kentucky, at No. 17, reached an all-time best position on the poll. At No. 27 Tulsa, makes their first appearance in this year’s poll.
* The Pac-12 leads all conferences with six teams in the top 30, followed by the Big Ten (5) and Big 12 (4).
WOMEN
* Florida State is the new No. 1 and was unanimously voted as so. The Seminoles were the victors of the Pre-National Invitational over then-No. 5 Georgetown, and then-No. 4 Colorado. It is the first time, since at least 1995, that FSU has been the top team in the country. Florida State is the tenth team to be ranked No. 1 since 1995 and joins BYU, Colorado, Duke, Georgetown, Oregon, Providence, Stanford, Villanova, and Washington who are all former number ones.
* Washington climbed 22 spots to No. 2 from 24th after winning Wisconsin’s adidas Invitational with 199 points. The Huskies topped 18 ranked teams for the victory which included then-top ten teams Villanova, Stanford, Syracuse, Iowa State, New Mexico, and Providence.
* Vanderbilt who was ranked in the national top 30 for the first time in team history on September 27, has made a move from unranked to the No. 3 squad in the country. The Commodores finished second to Washington at the adidas meet, and bested 17 ranked teams on Friday.
* Arizona jumped into the national top five for the first time this season at No. 5 after finished third to Washington and Vanderbilt at Wisconsin. The Wildcats were last in the top five in 1998.
* Texas’ women continue to break school records for their women’s cross country team. The Longhorns won the Chile Pepper Festival over then-No. 11 Arkansas and then-No. 29 Oklahoma State and now stand an all-time best No. 12.
* The Big East continues as the top conference with seven squads in the national top 30, followed by the Pac-12 (6) and the ACC (5).
NOTE: Next week is slated to be a "repeat" week, meaning all positions on this week’s poll will carry to next week.
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held on Monday, November 21, in Terre Haute, Ind. NCAA Regional Championships will be held nine days prior on Saturday, November 12.
