Assistant Coach: Chris Smith
Coach Chris Smith has been coaching the pole vault at Piedmont since 2003. In that time he has produced two North Coast Champions. He also developed a club program through USA Track and Field and has produced three All-Americans and one USATF Juniors National Champion in the pole vault. In 2008 he was selected by the US Olympic Committee to participate in an elite coaches developmental clinic at the Olympic Training Center. He is also a Level 1 USATF Coach and a safety certified pole vault coach.

NCS POLE VAULT AND HIGH JUMP JUDGING
POLE INSPECTION AND ATHLETE WEIGHT VERIFICATION (POLE VAULT)
Meet Management Responsibility
1.) Check pole weight labels to insure compliance with NFHS rules regarding athlete
weight, matching pole etching and proper label placement prior to the start of the
warm up period. Athletes will not be allowed to use a pole that has not been
checked by meet management for his/her warm up or competition. Athletes are
allowed to share poles if the pole being shared is presented to meet management
or the head pole vault official for approval for use by the athlete intending to use
said pole.
Coaches Responsibility
1.) Insure the pole(s) are in safe usable condition
2.) Insure pole(s) are proper length and are not altered in any way that would bring
them out of NFHS rules compliance
3.) Present to meet management a completed and signed accurate athlete weight
Verification form.
MEET MANAGEMENT HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE A SAFE
FACILITY AND LANDING SYSTEM THAT IS IN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL NFHS
RULES AND REGULATIONS AND MAINTAIN A SAFE AND CONTROLLED
ENVIRONMENT DURING THE WARM UP AND COMPETITION PERIODS
WARM UP PERIODS
1.) Check in time at the event site for warm up periods will 1½ hours for the pole vault
and 1 hour for the high jump prior to the start time for each competition.
2.) Coaches (pole vault only) and athletes will not be allowed to enter the competition
area to begin warm up prior to the check in time.
3.) No coach or athlete will be allowed to enter the competition area at any time without
proper identification (wrist band or coach’s field pass).
4.) Coaches will remain in the coach’s box during the warm up and competition periods.
Communication with athletes will take place on the side or behind the coach’s box.
The coach may leave the coaches box to during the competition to take care of
personal needs however must return promptly and cannot speak with the athlete(s) if
the athlete(s) is still a competitor unless they are in the coach’s box. The coach cannot
offer coaching to athletes involved in other events while they are in the competition
area at any time. The coach and the athlete(s) may leave the competition area once the
athlete(s) is no longer a part of the competition however they will not be allowed to
return.
5.) Use of a warm up bungee will be determined by of meet management
COMPETITION PERIODS
STARTING HEIGHTS OF HIGH JUMP AND POLE VAULT
Meet Management will determine starting heights after all of the entries are submitted.
Under no circumstances will the opening height be higher than the 40th percentile of
section entry marks. Continuing flights of “five alive” will be used until there are nine or
fewer competitors at the next height change. The competition will then be conducted as a
single flight consisting of the remaining competitors.
POLE VAULTERS / HIGH JUMPERS COMPETING IN OTHER EVENTS
Athletes may be excused for a maximum of thirty (30) minutes to compete in another
event.
Permission may be granted by the head event official to compete in his/her trials at the
current height out of order or opt to return to the event with the number of trials
remaining he/she was excused with.
In both above cases, the competition will continue and the athlete will return at whatever
the crossbar has been raised during his/her excused absence.
TIE BREAKERS
A jump off will occur to determine first place or a placing that would allow the athlete to
continue to the next competition (NCS Trials, MOC or CIF State Championships).
ALL NFHS AND CIF COMPETITION RULES FOR THE POLE VAULT AND HIGH
JUMP WILL APPLY
