Demus, women’s 4x100m earn USOC monthly honors
400-meter hurdler Lashinda Demus (Wilson HS, Long Beach 2001; South Carolina 2004)and the women’s 4x100m relay were selected as the United States Olympic Committee’s female athlete and team on the month, respectively, for the month of September. The committee made the announcement Friday.

The athletes won the vote for their September performances during the recent IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea, which ran August 27-September 4.

Demus earned the honor after winning her first world championships gold medal and setting an American record in the 400m hurdles in a time of 52.47 seconds. It bettered Kim Batten’s time of 52.61 she set in 1995, which was the last time Team USA won a world championships gold medal in the event. Demus, a two-time world championships silver medalist, defeated defending world champion Melanie Walker of Jamaica in the race. Demus is also a former world junior champion and world junior record holder.

Also winning a gold medal in Daegu was the women’s 4x100m. Bianca Knight, Allyson Felix (Los Angeles Baptist HS, North Hills, CA 2003; USC 2008 did not compete) Marshevet Myers, and Carmelita Jeter (Bishop Montgomery HS, Torrance, CA 1998; CS Dominiguez Hills 2003)teamed up to run a winning time of 41.56 and beat defending world champion Jamaica. It was the fastest time run in the world in 2011 and it was Team USA’s third world championships gold medal in the event since 2005.

The two gold medals were part of 12 total medals for Team USA’s women, which were the most ever at the world championships. Team USA’s men and women combined for 25 medals in Daegu.
