No. 10 Cal Women Seventh at Wisconsin Invite Golden Bear Men Also Take 25th in Strong National Field

Oct. 14, 2011

MADISON, Wis. - Running in one of the most competitive fields ever for a regular-season meet, Cal's 10th-ranked women's cross country team placed seventh at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational Friday behind a third-place individual performance by Deborah Maier. The Golden Bear men were 25th overall and paced by Collin Jarvis in 61st.

A total of 19 ranked teams were in the women's field that included 44 schools and 305 athletes. With three seniors leading the way - Maier, Chelsea Reilly and Taylor Dutch - the Cal women finished off another strong race three weeks after tying for first at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota.

On Friday, Maier's time of 20:11 was just eight seconds behind winner Sheila Reid of Villanova, who crossed the line after 6,000 meters in 2:03. Oregon's Jordan Hasay took second in 20:05.

Maier has now been Cal's lead runner in each of her last 14 races dating back to the 2008 season. Earlier this year, the 2010 All-American and two-time first-team All-Pac-10 choice won both the Sac State Jamboree and the Griak Invite.

Reilly finished 62nd for the Bears in 21:07, with Dutch a second behind in 65th place. Freshman Kelsey Santisteban (95th, 21:17) and sophomore Elisa Karhu (106th, 21:21) rounded out the scorers, while Keena Kohl (195th, 21:54) and Rebecka Oberg (284th, 23:08) completed the travel roster.

No. 24 Washington claimed the team title, with unranked Vanderbilt second and No. 14 Arizona third. With their 10th-place showing, the Bears finished ahead of 13 ranked teams, including No. 2 Providence, No. 7 New Mexico, No. 9 Iowa State and No. 12 Oregon.

In the men's race, Jarvis complete the 8,000-meter event in 24:36, with Maxime Chevee 89th in 24:45. Freshman Chris Walden raced for the first time since the opening USF Invitational in early September and took 112th in 24:53. Others on the course for Cal were J.P. Slater (135th, 25:02), Matt Petersen (215th, 25:44), Simon Schmidt (220th, 25:49) and Matt Miller (235th, 26:12).

Host and second-ranked Wisconsin finished atop the team standings, followed by No. 6 BYU and No. 4 Stanford. Twenty of the nation's top 30 schools were in the field of 39 teams and 270 runners. The Bears placed ahead of both No. 25 New Mexico and No. 28 Florida.

Several members of the Cal squad who did not travel to Wisconsin will run in the Bronco Invitational Saturday in Sunnyvale, while the full team's next meet is the Pac-12 Championships Oct. 29 in Tempe, Ariz.
