BERKELEY – On a picture-perfect day at Edwards Stadium, California used the ideal weather to set a host of lifetime bests at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge, while UTEP's  Emmanuel Korir blazed to victory in the Lon Spurrier men's 800 meters in the No. 2 time in the world this year.

The annual meet honors many of Cal's all-time greats with named events, and the Golden Bears did their best to live up to their legacy.

"Year in and year out, this is always the highlight of our regular season, and the kids didn't disappoint," director of track & field Tony Sandoval said. "For our seniors, it was their last home meet and they put their best foot forward. It helped that we had a great day of weather, and the people that were here, particularly UTEP, brought their A game. We're excited about what happened today and then we're going to get ready for Pac-12's."

For the Cal women, a couple of sophomores put their names on Cal's top 10 lists. First, Jordyn Colter ran to second in the Louise Romo 800 meters, with her time of 2:05.46 placing her No. 8 in school history. A short while later, Marissa Williams improved her personal best by five seconds, winning the Marilyn Davis 1500 meters in 4:19.77, which also moved her to eighth all-time at Cal.

In the women's triple jump, Ashley Anderson won the event and increased her PR to 42-9.00, which kept her No. 7 in Cal history.

In the most impressive race of the day, Korir sprinted away from the field in the men's 800 meters and crossed the line in 1:43.73. The freshman's time broke the stadium record of 1:45.37 set by Olympic gold medalist Joaquin Cruz in 1983.

A trio of Cal freshmen – Connor Meech, Paramveer Chohan and Branndon Marion – all PD'd in the men's 400-meter hurdles, with Meech claiming victory in 51.01 seconds.

The Bears' men's and women's 4x100-meter relays both finished in second-best times.

Freshman Zion Corrales Nelson, who set a pair of PRs in the women's 100- and 200-meter races Friday, established another lifetime best Saturday, taking second in 55.04.

One of the featured races each year is the Don Bowden men's mile, named for the Golden Bear who became the first American to break four minutes in the mile 60 years ago this June. Cal senior Thomas Joyce overtook UTEP's Jonah Koech down the stretch to win the event in 4:02.53.

Others winners on the day for Cal were:
The Bears will be back in action next weekend at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford.
