AUSTIN - Peter Simon will be joining Bethan Knights in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks at the NCAA Championships, as the California shot putter qualified for the national championships Friday afternoon at the NCAA West Regional from Austin, Texas. Simon finished sixth with a mark of 18.91, 62-0.5.

The Golden Bears' other top performer on the day was Ashtyn Davis in the 110m hurdles. Davis qualified for Saturday's quarterfinals, placing fourth overall in the first round with a time of 13.67.

"Our top-seeded athletes advanced comfortably today ," director of track & field Tony Sandoval said. "Ashtyn ran a controlled race in his heat to advance for tomorrow, while Peter was an easy qualifier for NCAAs. The field events are really tricky with only three attempts, so it can be nerve racking for everyone. Freshman shot put record holder McKay Johnson was 15th, and Kendall Mader moved up to 18th. Jordyn Colter came up just short of advancing in the 800."

The NCAA West Regional concludes tomorrow.
