Smyth, Mattox Win XTERRA Trail Run Worlds
KUALOA RANCH, Oahu, Hawaii (December 7, 2014) - Star power prevailed at Kualoa Ranch as Patrick Smyth defended his title and Kimber Mattox won her first at the Paul Mitchell XTERRA Trail Running World Championship Sunday.
Smyth, who resides in Salt Lake City, Utah and runs for the Nike trail team, was the overall winner, completing the 21Kchampionship course in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 39 seconds. Although challenged early by Brett Hales, the current XTERRA U.S. Trail Run Champion, Smyth was out-of-sight by the halfway point and crossed the line more than three-minutes ahead of Hales.
Mattox, who is from Bend, Oregon and was an All-American steeplechaser at the University of Oregon, was the first female and placed sixth overall with a time of 1:32:34. She caught
Allie McLaughlin at about the six-mile mark and despite taking a nasty tumble on one of the tricky downhills, still managed to finish almost three minutes ahead of McLaughlin.
More than 1,500 runners from 20 countries and 40 states participated in the event on an "Aloha from Hawaii" postcard-type of day at Kualoa Ranch.

Lazrus, Kreis Win Eau Palm Beach Marathon Titles
PALM BEACH, Fl. (Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014) -
Adam Lazrus' motive for entering the 11th Eau Palm Beach Marathon & Run Fest Sunday on the streets of downtown West Palm Beach and Lake Worth didn't include taking home the first-place prize. He had never won a marathon before. The 24-year-old from Silver Spring, Maryland, was simply trying to run a marathon in every state before he turns 30.
But make no mistake about it, he was happily celebrating his first career win when he kicked toward the finish line ahead of rising temperatures on a brisk South Florida morning that saw the thermostat hovering at a Maryland-like 67 degrees for the 6:30 a.m. start..
Lazrus ended up being one of four first-time winners as more than 3,800 runners from 25 countries ushered in the event's second decade..
Women's marathon winner Mary Kreis, 44, of Belle Vernon, Pa and both half marathon winners - 19-year-old University of Florida sophomore Samuel Luttier and 29-year-old stay-at-home mom Jen Rossano of Indianapolis - also won their maiden titles in the event produced by Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company.

Running USA Announces 2015 Grant Fundraising Campaign
(December 1, 2014) Running USA, the national non-profit trade organization for running events and businesses, announced today that it will seek to raise $50,000 to fund grant awards that support under-funded running programs.
Running USA has a strong history of supporting other non-profit running entities, but CEO Rich Harshbarger explained that this year's fundraising effort is different: adopting a grassroots approach open to donors at all funding levels, Running USA is asking anyone who loves runners and the sport of running to
join them in supporting this great cause.
"Previously, we've held an auction at our annual conference to raise money for these grants, but we realized that such an approach wasn't reaching the huge numbers of contributors who want to support some of running's most underfunded, yet truly exceptional, teams and programs," said Harshbarger. "This approach gives everyone whose life has been touched positively by running the chance to give back to the sport they so enjoy."
The grants that will be supported by the fundraising effort include: The Allan Steinfeld Development award, which supports one elite distance training organization annually, and the Running USA Youth Program of the Year and Youth Event of the Year. In the past, the Allan Steinfeld Award has been $25,000 and the two youth awards have each been $5,000. Dependent on the fundraising results, Running USA hopes to increase the number of grants awarded.
