Running USA Announces 2015 Grant Fundraising Campaign

(December 1, 2014) Running USA, the national non-profit trade organization for running events and businesses, announced today that it will seek to raise $50,000 to fund grant awards that support under-funded running programs.

Running USA has a strong history of supporting other non-profit running entities, but CEO Rich Harshbarger explained that this year's fundraising effort is different: adopting a grassroots approach open to donors at all funding levels, Running USA is asking anyone who loves runners and the sport of running to
join them in supporting this great cause.

"Previously, we've held an auction at our annual conference to raise money for these grants, but we realized that such an approach wasn't reaching the huge numbers of contributors who want to support some of running's most underfunded, yet truly exceptional, teams and programs," said Harshbarger. "This approach gives everyone whose life has been touched positively by running the chance to give back to the sport they so enjoy."

The grants that will be supported by the fundraising effort include: The Allan Steinfeld Development award, which supports one elite distance training organization annually, and the Running USA Youth Program of the Year and Youth Event of the Year. In the past, the Allan Steinfeld Award has been $25,000 and the two youth awards have each been $5,000. Dependent on the fundraising results, Running USA hopes to increase the number of grants awarded.

Chevron Houston Marathon Increases Race Day Cap to 27,000 for 2016 Races

HOUSTON (December 1, 2014) - The
Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) announced on Monday that 2016 will feature a field-size increase to 27,000 runners for the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon. Each race will be capped at 13,500 available entries. The ABB 5K, which will take place on Saturday of race weekend, will be capped at 6,000 participants.

The 33,000 registrants will be the highest in the 44-year history of the Chevron Houston Marathon Race Weekend which will take place January 15-17, 2016. Both races have sold-out for 10 consecutive years.

In addition to the announced cap increase, the HMC announced that it will implement a new three-stage registration system for the 2016 marathon and half marathon that will replace the lottery system implemented in 2010.

2014 Pacific Marine Credit Union O'side Turkey Trot Breaks Records

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Nov. 27, 2014) - Like many in the record crowd of 10,000, Sarah and Darren Brown started a new holiday tradition at the 9th Pacific Marine Credit Union O'side Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. Only their tradition started off with more of a gallop than a trot.

Darren shattered the course record in the opening 5 Mile Run, clocking 25 minutes, 5 seconds at his debut PMCU O'side Turkey Trot. A few minutes later, his wife, Sarah finished as the easy winner in the women's 5 Mile Run, finishing in 28:10. It was a great way for them to say welcome to Oceanside and North County.

"We just moved out here last February for my job at ElliptiGo in Solana Beach, so this will be our first Thanksgiving here," said Darren, who broke the course record of 25:16 set here last year by Lukas Verzbicas, lowering the mark by a substantial 11 seconds.

Kokopelli Kids - 2014 Youth Event of the Year

Perhaps the best part about Lisa Rainsberger's youth trail running series is that you don't have to be the fastest runner or the best athlete to participate. Rainsberger welcomes young runners of ability levels - including those who might not be able to participate in other sports.

"A top runner in his age group has Autism, another top runner has epilepsy, others have diabetes, two runners last year are deaf .. However, when the starting gun goes off none of that matters to the kids!" said Rainsberger, who won the Boston Marathon in 1984.

Today, she is a Colorado Springs-based coach, working not just with elite athletes but with children of diverse backgrounds. Her Kokopelli Kids
youth running program provides an active outlet - and scholarships - for youngsters whose parents might not be able to afford to place them in other sports activities.

"Time and time again, parents thank me for offering an event that does not require a 6 month and $1500 commitment. This event provides opportunity to participate for many kids," Rainsberger said. In spring 2014, the program had 300 participants, ranging in age from pre-schoolers to 8th
graders. Before running their first race, Rainsberger puts on a running clinic to help children and their parents learn about the sport.

In 2014, Kokopelli Kids was the recipient of a $5,000 youth grant award from Running USA, a national non-profit that supports the running industry. Two youth running programs or events are selected annually for this invaluable funding. For Rainsberger, the money allowed her to do many things to enhance Kokopelli Kids, including offering additional scholarships, enhancing her event website with online registration, improving the quality of her t-shirts for participants, and purchasing finish and start line banners.
