The San Jose State University women's track and field team makes its program debut Saturday, February 1, at the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Track on the University of Washington campus.
San Jose State is one of more than 20 West Coast schools with entries in the two-day meet that begins on Friday, January 31.
"We're excited to go to our first track meet. Obviously, it's big for our program. We're excited to see what we can do in the events in which we are entered this weekend," said San Jose State track and field head coach Jeff Petersmeyerwho projects taking 14 Spartans to Seattle. "We have a lot of people in the 60 meter dash and the mile.
"We want to see where we left off from cross country with the distance runners and see what kind of shape we are in and measure where we are at. In the 60, we have some new people that joined us recently and we want to gauge where are at as well.
The UW Invitational is the first NCAA track and field competition for the university since 1988 when the men's program competed for the last time at the Big West Conference Championships in Logan, Utah.
"We have the meet this weekend at Washington. We'll be at Fresno State for their invitational (February 16). Then, we'll have our (Mountain West) conference meet and anybody that qualifies after that, they'll have the NCAA Championships," Petersmeyer said about the 2014 indoor season.
