Keflezighi, Burla Take Home Titles at USA Half Marathon Championships

HOUSTON, Texas -- Two different race strategies led to the same result Sunday morning in Houston, Texas, as Olympian Meb Keflezighi (San Diego, Calif.) and marathon standout Serena Burla (Falls Church, Va.) captured titles at the USA Half Marathon Championships, hosted by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.

The USA Half Marathon Championships are the first stop on the USA Running Circuit, which will conclude this fall with the .US National Road Racing Championships. The top ten finishers at each race on the circuit qualify to compete in the .US National Road Racing Championships.

A strong contingent of runners paced the men's race early on. Through the first few miles, a pack of 14-16 men sized each other up, content to let Keflezighi, Tyler Pennel (Blowing Rock, N.C.) and Fernando Cabada (Boulder, Colo.) do much of the pacing.

Passing through the 5K split in 14:38, Keflezighi led, as experienced veterans Aaron Braun (Englewood, Colo.), Shadrack Biwott (Folsom, Calif.) and Josphat Boit (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) sat on his shoulder. The pack remained largely intact for the next half dozen miles, passing through the halfway point on sub-63 minute pace with nearly a dozen athletes still in contention.

As the ninth mile marker approached, Keflezighi made a small move, as he started to feel out the field. With the majority of the pack responding, Keflezighi sat back and waited.

Worku Defends Chevron Houston Marathon Title

HOUSTON - Two returning champions claimed their second Houston wins and
a pair of first-time victors were convincing winners Sunday at the
Chevron Houston Marathon
and Aramco Houston Half Marathon. 25,000 runners enjoyed superb weather conditions and a brand new course in front of raucous fans in a festival atmosphere to produce some of the best races in event history.

It took Bazu Worku almost 26 miles to shake fellow Ethiopian

Getachew Terfa, but over the final half-mile the defending champion pulled away to win the Chevron Houston Marathon in 2:07:32, the third-fastest time in race history. Terfa crossed the line 22 seconds later at 2 hours, 7 minutes, 54 seconds, and unheralded Mexican Jose Antonio Uribe shattered his personal best with a 2:08:54 to place third. PHOENIX (Jan. 19, 2014) - On a picture-perfect winter day in the Valley of the Sun, Kenya's Solomon Kandie triumphed at the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon, which featured a new finish line at Tempe Beach Park for the first time in the event's 11-year history.

The 35-year-old clocked a 2 hour, 21 minutes flat for the 26.2-mile race, which started in downtown Phoenix and ran through the city of Scottsdale before finishing in Tempe.

A lead pack of three hit the halfway mark in 1:10:41, including Kandie, who previously finished second in the event in 2011, and Americans Tim Eisenga and Thomas Puzey. Eisenga , who ran stride for stride with Kandie for the first half of the race, was the first to fade just before mile 20. Puzey held strong for nearly 4 more miles, but Kandie proved to be the class of the field making his move at mile 24 to finish with the victory.

Miami Marathon Generates $54 Million for Miami-Dade Country Economy

MIAMI - The 2013 Miami Marathon and Half Marathon, South Florida's largest marathon, generated $54.4 million in total economic impact for the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County in 2013 according to a study released by the Sport Industry Research Center (SIRC).

The three-day weekend event, held during the last weekend in January last year with a Sunday, February 2 date this year due to the calendar, features races including a 5K, half marathon, and marathon. It also includes one of the largest health and fitness expos in the region drawing over 40,000 visitors and participants to the Miami Beach Convention Center for the two days leading up to the race.

The economic impact generated by the Miami Marathon represented a $2.2 million increase from the 2012 event largely due to additional participants from the Caribbean and Latin America. Twenty percent of entrants in 2012 came from outside the U.S., a number that is increasing to 25 percent this year.
