Miami Marathon Generates $54 Million for Miami-Dade Country Economy
MIAMI - The 2013 Miami Marathon and Half Marathon, South Florida's largest marathon, generated $54.4 million in total economic impact for the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County in 2013 according to a study released by the Sport Industry Research Center (SIRC).
The three-day weekend event, held during the last weekend in January last year with a Sunday, February 2 date this year due to the calendar, features races including a 5K, half marathon, and marathon. It also includes one of the largest health and fitness expos in the region drawing over 40,000 visitors and participants to the Miami Beach Convention Center for the two days leading up to the race.
The economic impact generated by the Miami Marathon represented a $2.2 million increase from the 2012 event largely due to additional participants from the Caribbean and Latin America. Twenty percent of entrants in 2012 came from outside the U.S., a number that is increasing to 25 percent this year.
