BOSTON - (December 11, 2013) - John Hancock Financial today announced the return of 2013 Boston Marathon champions
Rita Jeptoo of Kenya and Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia for the 118th running of the race on Monday, April 21, 2014.

Desisa is a 23 year-old-talent who has won the Dubai Marathon in 2:04:45 and recently won the silver medal at the 2013 IAAF World Championships Marathon. Two months after the Boston Marathon, Desisa returned to participate in the
B.A.A. 10K and at that time gifted his Boston Marathon winner's medal to the City of Boston to honor the victims and families affected by the tragic events of April 15, 2013. He returned to Boston again in October to set a new course record at the B.A.A. Half Marathon.

Jeptoo of Kenya, the 2006 Boston champion, returned to win in commanding fashion and add the 2013 Boston victory to her impressive resume. In October she won the Chicago Marathon in 2:19:57, setting the fastest time of the year in the world for all women racing the marathon distance. Jeptoo is also past champion of marathons in Stockholm, Milan and Eldoret. She has finished in the top six at Boston five times.

"Mob" Events Gain Momentum, Says ACTIVE Survey
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - ACTIVE Network™, the leader in cloud-based Activity and Participant Management™ solutions, today released its second survey results about the habits of those who participate in Mob™ events. Mob events are characterized as hyper-social, experiential events, which continued to gain momentum through 2013. The survey panel was made up of 1200+ members of the ACTIVE.com endurance community, representing a segment of endurance athletes who participate in a variety of events such as triathlons, marathons, and other traditional running distances, as well as Mob events.

Among the key findings in the 2013 Mob survey:

-Continued interest in Mob events, with 86% of those surveyed planning to participate in Mob events in 2014 - and more than half (64%) specify they plan to participate in 1 to 2 events in the next year.

-82% of those surveyed cite the "fun factor" of Mob events as motivation to participate.

-Role of social media to drive awareness of events is up 17% year-over-year.

-Unprecedented growth in emerging Mob events, with 'paint runs' up by 300% year-over-year (gaining in popularity next to 'mud runs' and 'obstacle races').

-The importance of keeping events fresh is underscored by the 15% year-over-year decrease in participants planning to participate in the same event.
