Davies, Horst Win 2013 Atlanta Half Marathon

ATLANTA (November 28, 2013) - Approximately 11,000 runners and walkers earned their turkey this Thanksgiving at the 2013 Atlanta Half Marathon events on Thursday, November 28.

In addition to the Atlanta Half Marathon, the event featured the Thanksgiving Day 5K, the Mashed Potato Mile for children ages 7 to 12 and the Gravy Gallop for kids ages 6 and under.

"Through the Atlanta Half Marathon events, we are able to provide a healthy and active way to start Thanksgiving Day for those who are celebrating the holiday here in Atlanta," said
Sue Payne, Atlanta Track Club's interim executive director. "We are happy to see so many families and friends of all abilities come together to spend a part of their holiday running and walking."

Running USA Turkey Trot Data Featured Nationwide

If you ran a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day, you were not alone - not by a longshot.

Thanksgiving has become the most popular holiday for road racing in the United States.

Data illustrating the trend, compiled by Running USA, was featured in USA today and in an infographic distributed nationally last week.

In 2011, there were 698,000 people trotting on Thanksgiving Day, whether for competition, camaraderie, or just to cut down a few of the calories they planned to consume later.
That far and away surpasses the number of people who raced on the Fourth of July - 248,000 - or in New Year's Day "Resolution Runs," which rang in at 81,000 in 2011.

In 2012, Thanksgiving Day race finishers had grown to 858,000, and 2013 could see 1 million Turkey Trot finishers! It will take some time for the final numbers to come in.

Meanwhile, check out the Running USA and MapMyFitness infographic on Turkey Trot data, and find the

USA Today front page snapshot here.

6,000 Runners Flock to South Baptist Health Florida Turkey Trot

MIAMI - Runners as young as two years old and as old as 81 converged en masse on Tropical Park in Miami Thanksgiving morning to participate in what has become an annual tradition for the fitness set -- the
Baptist Health South Florida Turkey Trot presented by Publix.

More than 6,000 participants competed at the 10K or 5K distance with kids running races ranging from 100 meters for two and three-year-olds to 600 meters for eight and nine-year-olds.

The event was for both serious and recreational runners.

Local standouts Bryan Sharkey and Bryan Huberty battled it out in the front for the 10K crown. Sharkey finished in 32 minutes, 43 seconds and Huberty finished 40 seconds behind. Mark Allen won the 5K race in 14:59.

B.A.A. Announces Date, Location, and Field Size for 2014 B.A.A. 5K

BOSTON - The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has announced that the B.A.A. 5K will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014, two days prior to the 2014 Boston Marathon®. The start and finish will be relocated from Copley Square Park to Boston Common. Registration will be held online at www.baa.org beginning on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. ET and will be limited to 10,000 entrants. The cost to register is $50 USD and participants must be 10 years of age or older to register.

Since its inception in 2009, the B.A.A. 5K has been held on a Sunday, one day prior to the Boston Marathon. In recognition of Easter Sunday on April 20, 2014, the 2014 B.A.A. 5K will be held on Saturday, April 19, two days prior to the Boston Marathon.

"We have expanded the field size for the 2014 B.A.A. 5K to provide more people with an opportunity to experience one of our athletic events during Boston Marathon Weekend," said B.A.A. Executive Director Tom Grilk.

"In doing so we are particularly mindful of the desire of a great many people to make an athletic display of their resilience in the face of the April 2013 attack on Boston. With an adjusted location and date, the B.A.A. 5K will continue to provide the boost of excitement and running spirit that have quickly made it a Boston Marathon Weekend tradition embraced by elite and recreational runners alike."
