Grandma's Marathon
What started as a 150-person race in 1977, when a local running club called the North Shore Striders partnered with Grandma's Restaurant to host a marathon, has grown to become the area's largest annual event - generating millions of dollars in economic impact.
Currently the 14th largest U.S. marathon, the Grandma's Marathon's course is ideal for first-timers and veteran marathoners alike. With a net elevation drop of about 130 feet, the point-to-point trek is relatively flat, features gorgeous views of Lake Superior and has unmatched hospitality and passionate community spirit.
After starting just outside of Two Harbors, MN, marathoners run adjacent to the lake's scenic north shore for the first two-thirds of the 26.2 miles. Once you make your way into the residential areas of eastern Duluth around mile 19, you'll begin to encounter the most supportive and enthusiastic crowds found anywhere. Runners then work their way into the city's downtown business district and eventually the finish line in Duluth's famous Canal Park tourist area where the celebration begins.
A unique aspect separating Grandma's from the rest is that race day lands on Saturday. Unlike many other major marathons which run on Sunday, Grandma's scheduling allows an extra day to rejoice and recover.
A half marathon and 5K accompany the marathon. Marathon registration is currently open while half marathon and 5K entry periods begin in February and March, respectively.
Other events such as the Whipper Snapper Races for Kids, the Michelina's All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner, the Essentia Health Fitness and Health Expo, guest speaking presentations and live music help make for a weekend experience that participants, family members and race fans will remember forever!
The 2014 event will be held on June 21.Visit www.grandmasmarathon.com for more information on all of Grandma's Marathon weekend races and events.
All Member Profiles will also be featured on our website for one full week following the publication in Running USA Industry E-News. To be featured in this section, contact nancy@runningusa.org.
