Ward, Warren, Lyles Claim Titles on Day Four of USA Youth Championships

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Ja’Mari Ward, Bre’anna Warren, and Nia Lyles each claimed their second national titles on the fourth day of competition at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Southern Illinois University on the Edwardsville campus.

The nation’s top young athletes in two-year age divisions ranging from 8 and under to 17-18-year-olds are competing in Edwardsville. Competition continues Saturday and will conclude Sunday.

Ward, Warren and Lyles were three of many standout performances during the fourth day of the championships that saw 19 national champions crowned.

Ja’Mari Ward won the 15-16 boys’ triple jump easily, with a hop, skip and jump of 14.22m/46-08.00 on his best attempt. Ward’s best mark eclipsed the next competitor by more than five feet. For Ward, the triple jump title is his second of the championships, the first occurred yesterday when he jumped 14.22m/46-08.00 in the 15-16 boys’ long jump.

A long day for Bre’anna Warren ended with two gold medals, one in the shot put and one in the discus. Warren picked up her first medal in the 17-18 women’s shot put when her marked measured 13.50m/44-03.50. In the afternoon, she won her second title when her discus landed 44.32m/45-05, more than nine feet past the second place finisher.

Nia Lyles dominated the 11-12 girls’ shot put, putting the shot 13.04m/42-09.50. The winning distance surpassed the nearest competitor by more than eight feet, securing Lyles’ second title of the week. Her first title came yesterday when she threw the discus 13.04m/42-09.50.

In the 15-16 boys’ discus throw, Ricky Hurley propelled the discus 54.10m/177-06 for the victory. Hurley’s mark established a new personal record and exceeded his competitors by more than 13 feet.
