"Houston is a wonderful sports town and the marathon has been a large part of that for over 40 years," said
Mayor Annise Parker. "There is no single-day sporting event with the history that the Chevron Houston Marathon has in Houston. The new courses will showcase our great city and all it has to offer to the 250,000 volunteers, spectators and runners from all 50 states and 30 countries."
The new marathon and half marathon courses will provide a better participant experience for the runner by giving them more space and wider roads to run on. The first eight miles, now populated with local businesses and easier to access through major thoroughfares, will improve the spectator experience as well.

Monterey Bay Running Club Distributes Scholarships
MONTEREY, Calif. - For over ten years, the Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners (WNLRs) have provided scholarships to outstanding high school seniors throughout Monterey County. This year, a total of $11,000 in scholarship awards, ranging from $300 to $2000, were given to students who were nominated by their coaches and met the WNLRs running and educational criteria.
"Our running club is dedicated to distance running, health, and fitness and we want to encourage and recognize our local senior runners. We're proud that one of our 2008 scholarship winners, Diego Estrada, ran in the Olympics in 2012, but we're just as proud of Francisco Cornejo, one of our 2007 winners, who after earning a Master's degree in Education is back in our community teaching and coaching cross country and track," said Mike Dove, who created the WNLR Scholarship Program in 2001. The scholarships are derived from donations of the WNLR club members including a grant from the Big Sur International Marathon, a Running USA member race.

NYYR Works with Partnership for a Healthier America to Encourage Young Runners
NEW YORK CITY - The
Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works with the private sector and PHA Honorary
Chair First Lady Michelle Obama
to solve the nation's childhood obesity crisis, and New York Road Runners (NYRR) came together to announce a multiyear commitment to increase access to physical activity opportunities for kids across the nation. Over the next five years, NYRR will invest $7 million in its Mighty Milers program and distribute
its coaching and fitness resources for free, teaching and inspiring more than 500,000 kids to run. The new investment will continue NYRR's focus on reaching students in underserved neighborhoods.
"Currently, only about half of children in the United States receive the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day," said PHA CEO
Lawrence A. Soler. "Ending the physical inactivity crisis is an important part of reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. With commitments like the one New York Road Runners has made today, we move one step closer in the fight to end childhood obesity."
Mighty Milers, NYRR's national, school- and community-based K-8 running program, motivates children of all fitness levels to run or walk regularly and reach their personal distance goals. Over the next five years, through an investment of $7 million dollars, NYRR will expand the number of participating schools by 20 percent and increase the number of student participants by at least 25 percent. In addition, NYRR will disseminate its free digital teaching resource, Running Start, to at least 2,500 schools, arming them with the tools necessary to keep their students active.
