Haney, Fisher Battle to close finish at Day One of World Youth Trials

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill., - The first day of the World Youth Track & Field Trials started in dramatic fashion as Blake Haney and Grant Fisher battled to a close finish in the men’s 3,000m run in the first event of the day at Southern Illinois University at the Edwardsville campus.

The outdoor championship gives 16 and 17-year-old athletes from across the nation the chance to represent Team USA at the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships to be held July 10-14, in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Haney (Bakersfield, Calif.) held off Fisher (Grand Blanc, Mich.) to win the 3,000m. Haney crossed the line at 8:32.44, just over two-tenths of a second before Fisher.

The men’s pole vault provided drama and excitement as Devin King (Kentwood, La.) and Paulo Benavides (El Paso, Texas) both cleared 4.95m/16-02.75 to tie atop the leaderboard. King had fewer misses to secure the victory on the tiebreaker.

Amir Ali Patterson (Encino, Calif.) displayed his strength in the men’s shot put. Patterson launched the shot 19.89m/65-03.25, almost seven feet farther than his closest competitor.

In the men’s javelin, Denham Patricelli (Maple Valley, Wash.) dominated the competition. Patricelli’s throw of 67.49m/221-05 sailed nearly nine feet past his closest competitor’s throw.

Bailey Roth (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ran away from the field in dominating fashion in the men’s 2,000m steeplechase. The Colorado state champion finished in 5:47.42, with his closest competitor finishing 36 seconds behind.

Competition will resume tomorrow, June 26th at 7:30 a.m. Central Time with the boys octathlon.
