Korir, Gebre win 37th Garden of the Gods Ten Mile, Gebre Resets Her Own Course Record
MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - The Garden of the Gods Ten Mile Run is dry, high and hard. Yet Belainesh Gebre
has managed to set and reset the women's course record each time she has run this demanding race, and this year was no different. Gebre, 25, ran a blazing 58 minutes and 45 seconds on the hilly 10-mile course, breaking her old course record by four seconds. Gebre placed 19th overall and outdistanced the women's field by 2:28.
Leonard Korir captured the men's race. He trains in Colorado Springs and grew up at 8,000 feet in Kenya, but said he has never gotten used to running hills in high elevation. The former NCAA standout at Iona College is no stranger to tough races, but said Sunday's race was the hardest he had he could remember.
"The altitude affects me a lot...hills in altitude are so hard," he said, adding that he prefers training at altitude and then racing at sea level. Korir settled into third for most of the race, then made his move in the final mile to take the win in 50:48, seconds ahead of Ernest Kembenei (50:55). Both men broke the previous age group record for men 25-29.
Daniel Kipkoech was third in 51:06.

Mamitu Dasku Bests Global Talent at Oakley NYRR Mini 10K
NEW YORK (June 8, 2013) - With the field so full of U.S. and international champions, it was tough to predict who'd make it to the podium at this year's Oakley New York Mini 10K. At the media event on Friday morning, the day before the race, U.S. Olympian Desiree Davila said she was thrilled to be here again; the field's traditional depth was illustrated by her 11th-place finish last year. "The history of this race goes back so many years, and this is always a fun event," Davila said. "Having run the course really helps me know what to expect."
With more than 5,500 runners lined up behind them, the pros took off on Central Park West this morning for a mile-plus slightly uphill battle for the lead, before bearing right into the park at 90th Street. Early in the race, two-time Mini champion
Linet Masai of Kenya and Ethiopia's Mamitu Daska
turned up the heat and left the rest of the pack behind. In the fourth mile, Daska made her move and built a 50-meter lead on Masai, which she never gave up. In her third Mini, Masai took second.
"Once I dropped them, I figured I had the win," said Daska, who also won the Aramco Houston Half-Marathon this year. "It was very competitive out there, which encouraged me to run better." She finished in 31 minutes, 47 seconds.

NYYR Works with Partnership for a Healthier America to Encourage Young Runners
NEW YORK CITY - The
Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works with the private sector and PHA Honorary Chair First Lady Michelle Obama to solve the nation's childhood obesity crisis, and New York Road Runners (NYRR) came together to announce a multiyear commitment to increase access to physical activity opportunities for kids across the nation. Over the next five years, NYRR will invest $7 million in its Mighty Milers program and distribute its coaching and fitness resources for free, teaching and inspiring more than 500,000 kids to run. The new investment will continue NYRR's focus on reaching students in underserved neighborhoods.
"Currently, only about half of children in the United States receive the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day," said PHA CEO Lawrence A. Soler. "Ending the physical inactivity crisis is an important part of reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. With commitments like the one New York Road Runners has made today, we move one step closer in the fight to end childhood obesity."
Mighty Milers, NYRR's national, school- and community-based K-8 running program, motivates children of all fitness levels to run or walk regularly and reach their personal distance goals. Over the next five years, through an investment of $7 million dollars, NYRR will expand the number of participating schools by 20 percent and increase the number of student participants by at least 25 percent. In addition, NYRR will disseminate its free digital teaching resource, Running Start, to at least 2,500 schools, arming them with the tools necessary to keep their students active.

Unique Event Art for 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
MINNEAPOLIS - Midwest Special Services, Inc. (MSS), has partnered with Twin Cities In Motion (TCM) for the 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon to create the commemorative poster for this year's event. Midwest Special Services submitted design ideas to
Twin Cities In Motion in January 2013, and the marathon organizer and its design partner, Orangeseed, transformed an MSS tapestry into the event poster that will be sold to thousands of participants in the event.
The 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon poster was inspired by the 40+ foot collaborative Saori weaving that was created over countless hours by more than 30 MSS clients. The creative works from these MSS clients inspired TCM to design a photo collage that weaves together hundreds of individual photo squares to form the number 26.2 in honor of the marathon distance.
"The artwork creation for the 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon was a great project for our artists and it showcases their creativity in a very rewarding way," says Lyth Hartz,
President of Midwest Special Services, Inc. "Being able to see the finished product all over the metro is extremely rewarding and the weaving it took to create the artwork is a perfect match as it mirrors the rhythmic and contemplative nature of running a marathon."
