Carter Aims to Book World Ticket

Stanford contingent heads to U.S. Championships
Thursday-Sunday, June 20-23 • Drake Stadium • Des Moines, Iowa
Two weeks after winning an NCAA championship with a world-leading time, Kori
Carter aims for a spot in the IAAF World Championships. A top three finish at the USATF
Championships this week will book the Stanford junior a trip to Moscow, Russia, from
August 10-18.
Carter, who already has achieved a world championships ‘A’ standard in the 400-meter
hurdles, will be among four Stanford athletes competing at the senior national
championships in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, seven Cardinal, including two redshirts,
will compete in the simultaneous junior meet.

Recruits in Action
Five Stanford recruits are among the declared entries for the junior championships,
though one -- discus thrower Valarie Allman -- is slated to compete in both the junior and
senior meets. Allman, from Silver Creek High in Longmont, Colo., has the nation’s longest
high school throw and the No. 16 mark among all Americans, including professionals, at
184-2.
Other Cardinal recruits in action are Dylan Duvio (River Ridge, La.), who has the No. 2
pole vault among high schoolers (17-3 1/2), Sean McGorty (Fairfax, Va.), who has the No.
3 mile (4:04.47), Megan Glasmann (Park City, Utah) with the No. 5 javelin throw (156-3),
and triple Idaho state distance champion Thomas Rigby (Boise; 800, 1:50.80)

400 hurdles event breakdown
Kori Carter enters as the top qualifier and the world leader as
she seeks to earn her first Olympic or World Championships berth.
Carter is used to a large workload, running four races (including
preliminaries) in four days at the NCAA Championships. This time,
she will need to run three rounds in three days.
The timing of the meet favors Carter. She is in top form, having
run world-leading times in three races this season. In contrast, this
is early for many professionals, who are just starting to round into
form.
An example: On June 7, Carter set a collegiate and NCAA meet
record, and world-leading time, of 53.21 to win the NCAA Championships
in Eugene, Ore. On June 13, Lashinda Demus, the 2011
world champion, was finishing fifth at the Bislett Games in Oslo.
Demus, who ran 52.77 in her Olympic silver medal run last year,
must be considered the favorite because of her background, but
faded down the stretch in Oslo while running a season best 54.69.
Moline, the NCAA runner-up, is the No. 2 American this year at
53.72, but has lost to Carter in all five meetings this year.
Can Demus regain her Olympic-level fitness so soon? If she can’t,
then Dalilah Muhammad could become Carter’s biggest challenge.
Muhammad ran a personal best 54.33 in Oslo to run down Demus
and the former USC star appears to be a rising star in the event.
As for Carter, she is undefeated this year, is in the best shape of
her life, and is extremely confident in her abilities. This could be her
meet.

BRIANNA BAIN
Javelin
P.R.: 183-10

(Aloha HS)
Javelin event breakdown
Stanford sophomore Brianna Bain attempts to establish herself on
the national scene. She got her first taste of elite competition last year
at the Olympic trials, but was unable to make the final and was 13th
overall.
Bain was third at the recent NCAA Championships at 176-1, but
was the top American. Though disappointed with her placing, her
series was more consistent than when she placed second in 2012 at
180-2.
Brittany Borman, the 2012 Olympic trials champion, has the nation’s
leading throw by a substantial margin, with 192-8 to Bain’s
No. 2 toss of 183-10. Kara Patterson threw 196-2 in a trials runnerup
finish last year, and Penn State’s Laura Loht was right at Bain’s
heels in the NCAA meet.
Even with a top-three finish, Bain will need a big improvement to
reach the standards for the IAAF World Championships in Russia
in August. The world ‘A’ standard is 203-5 and the ‘B’ standard is
196-10.
800 event breakdown
Stanford freshman Amy Weissenbach intends to make this a better
experience than the 2012 Olympic trials. Just out of high school,
Weissenbach had to come to nearly a complete stop to avoid a fallen
runner and did advance out of the first round.
She will need to finish among the top two in her seven-runner first
round heat to gain an automatic spot in the 16-runner semifinals.
Weissenbach’s 2:02.29 is the 16th-best qualifying mark in the field. A
finals berth would be an outstanding achievement.

(Troy HS)
1,500 event breakdown
During the indoor season, Stanford junior Michael Atchoo ran the
fastest Stanford mile in 27 years, clocking 3:57.14 to win the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation championship.
Atchoo’s outdoor season was highlighted by his personal record
3:39.57 at the Payton Jordan Invitational on his home track. The
time remains the third-fastest among collegians this season, though
Atchoo was unable to reach the finals at the NCAA Championships.
Coming off his NCAA performance, Atchoo certainly has motivation
in his first senior nationals. However, to ensure a spot in the
USATF final, he must place in the top three of his 16-runner section,
one of three, with only three others advancing on time. Coming from
the first heat, that may be difficult.
Atchoo must navigate through a strong first-round group that
includes Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano, Olympic 5,000 finalist
Lopez Lomong, 3:52 miler David Torrence, and Payton Jordan
Invitational winner Riley Masters of Oklahoma.
