Kipruto, Rotich Take Top Honors at 37th Quad-City Times Bix 7

Abdirahman leads American finishers in sixth place

Story courtesy Quad-City Times

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Unlike most of the runners from Kenya who compete on the United States road running circuit, Silas Kipruto is tall enough to pass for a basketball player.

And on Saturday, July 30, he pretty much slam-dunked the rest of the field in the 2011 Quad-City Times Bix 7.

The 6-foot-4 Kipruto slipped into the lead just before the halfway mark of the race, then thoroughly dominated the second half on his way to an 11-second victory over a pack of fellow Kenyans.

He earned $12,500 for his victory, which he said was more difficult than his recent triumph in the Wharf to Wharf 6-miler in California.

His winning time of 32 minutes, 36 seconds tied for the 50th best in the history of the race.

Four Kenyans followed Kipruto across the finish line, led by Allan Kiprono, who led for much of the first half of the race. Lani Rutto was third, Shadrack Kosgei fourth and Linus Chumba, another early-pace-setter, was fifth.

The top American finisher was Abdi Abdirahman, who took sixth in his second Bix appearance. He was second in 2002.

In the women's race, Caroline Rotich took control of the women's field near the midpoint of the Quad-City Times Bix 7 and never looked back.

The 27-year-old Kenyan covered the seven-mile course through the streets of Davenport in 36 minutes, 42 seconds to top fellow Kenyan Jelliah Tinega by 1:04.

"I was with a pack (including Tinega and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom) near the turnaround and I was able to get ahead and I just took off,'' Rotich said. "After that, I never slowed down.''

Rotich's winning time was the fastest for a female competitor at the Bix 7 since Susan Chepkemei of Kenya established a course record with her winning time in 2004.

A first-time entry in the Bix 7 and fourth-place finisher in this year's Boston Marathon, Rotich said she felt strong from the start in a race that served as a tune-up for the World Championships.

Tinega finished in 37:46 while Diane Nukuri-Johnson, a former University of Iowa runner from Burundi, took third in 37:59. Madai Perez of Mexico was fourth in 38:33.

Gebremariam to Defend Title at TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K

Olympic medalists Deena Kastor and Catherine Ndereba highlight women's field

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine - The 2011 TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race will feature reigning champ Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia and two Olympic medalists, American marathon record holder Deena Kastor and Kenyan Catherine Ndereba, race officials announced.

The trio headline yet another deep and talented field of world-class athletes for the 14th edition of the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K (www.beach2beacon.org), set for Saturday, Aug. 6, along the scenic coastline of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The race was founded by Olympic champion Joan Benoit Samuelson, a Maine native and running icon.

For Deena Kastor, the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K marks the strategic next step in her return to competitive racing after giving birth to her first child in February. The 38-year-old is building up to the Olympic marathon trials in January, hoping to regain the form that made her the most decorated American distance runner over the past decade.

Kastor broke Samuelson's long-held American marathon record in 2003 and won bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics. She also won the Chicago (2005) and London (2006) marathons, set an American record in the half marathon in 2006, and won the 2008 Olympic Trials. But a foot injury at the 2008 Beijing Olympics caused her to withdraw early in the race. Her goal is to again chase gold in London next year.

Kastor will find a familiar foe in Catherine Ndereba, 39, a Kenyan running legend and two-time Olympic marathon silver medalist - in Beijing in 2008 and in Athens in 2004, when she finished one place ahead of Kastor. Known as 'Catherine the Great', she is a four-time BAA Boston Marathon champ, two-time World Champ and former world-record holder. Ndereba won five of the first six TD Bank Beach to Beacons and is the former course record holder (31:33). Following a five-year absence, Ndereba returned to the race in 2010 and, rehabbing an injury, finished sixth.

"Catherine and Deena are legends in their sport who add something really special to our elite field," said Larry Barthlow, the race's elite athlete coordinator. "Many of the younger runners look up to them the same way they revere Joanie. And it's neat to think of how they finished 2-3 at the 2004 Olympics and here they are together again in our race."

But any quest for a top spot at the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K will likely need to go through Ethiopians Werknesh Kidane and Wude Ayalew.

Kidane, 29, a two-time Olympian, is a former World Cross Country champion and World Championship silver medalist on the track, where she has clocked 30:07 at 10,000m. The wife of defending men's champ Gebremariam, she made her marathon debut at the 2011 Boston Marathon, finishing seventh.

Ayalew, 24, might be the most determined runner in the race. In 2010, she finished second to Lineth Chepkuri's record setting performance (30:59). Her time of 31:07 also broke the record, and stands as the second fastest time ever on the 6.2-mile course.

In Ayalew's only other TD Bank Beach to Beacon performance in 2007, she came in as a race favorite but got tangled with another runner early in the race, never recovered and finished a disappointing fourth.

On the men's side, the speedy Gebre Gebremariam, known as GG, who is also the reigning NYC Marathon champ, will have his work cut out for him to repeat, and will likely need to improve on his 27:40 from 2010.

Two top Kenyans, Micah Kogo and Mike Kigen, were upset in their highly competitive national track championships recently and have decided to test their speed in Cape Elizabeth, Barthlow said.

That means the course record (27:28) is in jeopardy, he said. Kogo, who won silver at 10,000m in the 2008 Olympics, has recorded the fastest 10K so far in 2011 - 27:15 at the Parelloop 10K in Holland. Kigen finished second in that race with a 27:26.

Also, the three runners who finished right behind GG in 2010 are back - Kenyans Alan Kiprono (27:42), Wilson Chebet (27:45), and Stephen Kipkosgei-Kibet (27:51). The race also includes two runners who know what it's like to break the tape in Fort Williams - former multiple champs and Kenyans Ed Muge (2008-09) and Gilbert Okari (2003-04-05), who set the existing course record in 2003. Also, another former champ, Kenyan James Koskei (2002), is back seeking his third consecutive master's title.

Prize money for the winner of the men's and women's races is $10,000. In all, nearly $60,000 in prize money will be awarded to the top finishers and place winners in the various categories for men and women. A $2,500 bonus also is available for any runner who breaks an open course record.

The TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K is considered one of the gems on the U.S. road race circuit. The race begins near the Crescent Beach State Park entrance on Route 77 in Cape Elizabeth and ends 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams Park at the Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in America. Chevron Houston Marathon Brings in $51.1M for Houston

Run for a Reason charity program raised a record $2.1 million for local nonprofits

HOUSTON - The Chevron Houston Marathon race weekend of events generated approximately $51.1 million in total economic impact for the City of Houston this January, more than doubling its last economic impact report from 2003, according to a commissioned study released today.

"As we approach our 40th anniversary, our organization continues to conduct an event that is a point of pride for the community," stated Houston Marathon Committee Executive Director Wade Morehead. "Providing an annual event that has a significant economic impact for local businesses and charities is the result of the commitment, dedication and passion exhibited annually by our participants, volunteers, sponsors and committee members."

The study breaks down the economic impact into three categories: direct expenditures, indirect and induced expenditures, and other sources based on spending in a variety of categories including hotel, transportation, entertainment and retail. The largest single expense category in all cases was restaurants. Expenditures at the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann EXPO, a two-day health and fitness exhibition attracting more than 60,000 attendees, and hotel expenses were also significant.

"The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority recognizes the significance that a $51.1 million annual event has on the local community and how much it helps our sales efforts to attract other prestigious, major sporting events to the region," commented Janis Schmees, HCHSA executive director. "Due to the success and enormous growth of the Chevron Houston Marathon over the years, our region has developed a national reputation in the running community for putting on a first-class event. This was clearly recognized by USA Track & Field, as well as the United States Olympic Committee when Houston won the bid to host the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon."

Conducted by Dr. Don Hoyte, Principal of TexasEconomicImpact.com, the economic impact study is based on a survey of more than 4,700 participants in the 2011 Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon and El Paso Corporation 5K.

"This study of the economic impact of race weekend is significant in several respects," stated Hoyte, who has developed methods to assess the economic impact of multiple sporting events, including the 2004 Super Bowl, 2004 and 2008 Final Fours, 2006 NBA All-Star Game, 2006 MLB All-Star Game, and the 2007 Big 12 Football Championship.

"First, it documents the direct expenditures by starters, affiliated and associated fans as reaching nearly $22.1 million for all three races. Second, by applying the consistent and industry-standard economic analysis tool of IMPLAN multipliers, this direct impact is seen as generating another $20.6 million in economic gains to the city of Houston. Third, the results of a survey effort based on more than 4,700 participant responses - representing about 1 in every 4 runners - provides incontrovertible proof of the importance of this event to Houston and the state of Texas."

Approximately $12.3 million represents indirect and induced expenditures, impacts on the City of Houston that would not have occurred if the Chevron Houston Marathon race weekend of events did not take place.

In addition, the number of jobs supported by expenditures on the event is based on the $34.4 million in direct, indirect and induced expenditures. In total, expenditures at the event directly supported 359 jobs in the Houston metro area, 43 jobs through indirect expenditures and 45 jobs through induced economic effects for a total of 447 jobs.

Other economic gains to the Greater Houston area included media coverage of these events which generated in excess of $14.5 million based on print and online articles and media broadcasts. In addition, nearly $2.1 million was raised for 52 local nonprofits through the Run for a Reason charity program, which has generated more than $12.4 million in its 17-year history.

The Houston Marathon Committee last conducted an economic impact survey in 2003 before the event had grown to its current size and popularity.
