Track & Field Adds Talented Recruit Class

BERKELEY - California track & field welcomes a 31-member recruiting class to campus this fall, a group that features a number of state high school meet finalists, including four champions, plus last year's state junior college winner in the discus.
Although haul is heavy in middle and long distance runners, with 19 runners specializing the 800 meters and higher, Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval and his staff brought in a class proficient in a wide array of events.
Leading the crowd of freshmen is Jantzen Oshier of Trabuco Hills HS in Mission Viejo, Calif., who was named to the USA Today All-America team after capturing the California title in the 1600 meters with a national-best time of 4:00.83. He was also a two-time top-10 finisher at the state cross country meet and placed 22nd at Foot Locker Nationals.
Chris Walden, who hails from Carmel, Ind., ranked among the top 10 in the country and was the Indiana runner-up in both the 1600 (4:08.26) and 3200 (8:51.59) his senior year. He claimed the state crown in the 1600 as a junior. During this past cross country season, he placed fifth at the Foot Locker meet.
Among the new Golden Bear women, Grace Beaudoin from Kernville, Texas, won the Texas 2A crown in the high jump after clearing 5-8, while Carisma Lyday from Lakewood, Calif., was a member of the Long Beach Poly HS foursome that took the California title in the 4x100 relay.
In the field events, Derek White captured the 2011 California JC championship in the discus while competing for De Anza College. A graduate of San Jose's Oak Grove HS, he owns a PR of 178-0 in the discus and 176-0 in the hammer.
Mackenzi Landry out of Newcastle, Calif., and Del Oro HS has cleared 13-1 in the pole vault, a mark that ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 6 in the country during her junior season in 2010. She is the younger sister of former Cal pole vaulter Connor Landry.
Another signee with family ties to the Bears is Rebecka Oberg, sister of junior Sofia Oberg. Rebecka was a medalist at the national Swedish cross country team and owns a PR of 4:41.50 in the 1600 meters.
Others to watch include Bryan Jordan (Reno, Nev./Galena HS), who was second at the Nevada state meet in both the 1600 and 3200; Chris Kigar (Sacramento, Calif./El Camino HS), who took sixth at the California cross country championships and was 38th at Foot Locker Nationals; Kat Delany (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Junipero Serra HS), whose PR of 4:42.95 ranked sixth nationally last year; and Dynasty Gammage (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS), who ran the No. 3 time in the state and No. 12 time in the country when she finished the 800 meters in 2:08.72.

Posted a PR of 16-2 as a senior, which ranked third in the state and 29th nationally among high school pole vaulters ... pole vault champion at the Mt. Carmel Invitational, the California Relays and Nike Nationals ... the state runner-up as a junior in 2010 with a clearance of 15-9 ...cleared 16-0 for the first time to win the '10 Mission League title ... took third in the pole vault in the invitational high school division at the Mt. A 200-400 specialist in high school ... best marks were 21.89 in the 200 meters as a junior and 47.92 in the 400 as a senior ... seventh in the state meet in the 400 as a junior with a time of 48.65 ... the Orange County champion in the 200 his sophomore year (22.24).

Helped his high school team qualify for the state meet in the 4x100-meter relay ... also ran 10.88 in the 100 in the preliminary round but did not advance to the final ... owns a best of 10.79 in the 100 ... took third in the Sac Joaquin Masters meet.

CIF state meet qualifier in three events - long jump, triple jump and high jump - and took ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-3.75 ... did not record a height in the high jump and was 21st in the long jump prelims (20-11.50) ... PR in the triple jump is 48-11.25, while he as a best of 24-6 in the long jump and 6-8 in the high jump ... the Bay Shore champion in all three events as a senior ... also won the Bay Shore title in the long jump his junior year.

Ranked third in the state of Indiana in the 800 meters with a PR time of 1:53.62 ... time came during a victory at the Nike Track Nationals ... placed fifth in the state meet in 1:54.25 ... claimed the Southport Sectional crown in the 800.
