Solinsky named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Chris Solinsky has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the men's 10,000m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

The 2009 USA Outdoor 5,000m runner-up, Solinksy, in his debut performance, became the first American to run under 27 minutes in the men's 10,000m, winning the race in an American record 26:59.60. The previous record of 27:13.98 was set by Meb Keflizighi at this same meet in 2001. Solinsky's time is also a North American area record.

Solinksy ran with the lead pack, which included two rabbits, and went through the halfway point in 13:34. With the rabbits dropping out at 6,500m, it was Galen Rupp, Kenyans Sam Chelanga and Daniel Salel, and Solinsky. With just under 800m to go, Solinsky took the lead and never looked back, opening up a sizeable gap. His last 800m was clocked at an unofficial 1:56.2, and his world-leading 26:59.60 was over eight seconds ahead of runner-up Salel (27:07.85). Rupp finished fourth in 27:10.74, also under the previous American record.

Now in its ninth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
