Ellis Sets The USC Indoor 400m Record And Both Relays Win At McCravy Invitational

Kendall Ellis set the USC women's indoor 400m record and both the men's and women's 4x400m relays posted impressive wins during the final day of action at the 2017 Rod McCravy Invitational held in Lexington, Ky. today (Jan. 21). In addition, Marquis Morris in the men's 60m hurdles, Nick Ponzio in the men's shot put and Just'N Thymes in the men's 60m dash all placed second in their respective events. • Ellis placed second in the women's 400m dash with a school-record time of 51.52, just behind Shakima Wimbley of Miami who ran 51.28. Ellis' time was a PR by 1.25 seconds and broke the previous school standard of 52.22 set by Jaide Stepter last season. Kyra Constantine won her 400m heat with a time of 54.24 and finished 12th overall. Constantine's time moved her into eighth on USC's all-time indoor 400m top-10. Kennedy Gillian ran 56.65 to finish second in her heat and 31st overall. • USC's women's 4x400m relay of Cameron Pettigrew, Amalie Iuel, Kyra Constantine and Kendall Ellis won its heat and took first overall with a time of 3:31.72. Only three of the 14 teams posted a time under 3:35.75. USC's relay team moved into third place on the Trojans' all-time indoor top-10 in the event. • USC ran Ricky Morgan Jr., Just'N Thymes, Robert Ford and Zyaire Clemes in the men's 4x400m relay and they posted the second-fastest time in school history of 3:07.80 to win its heat and take first place overall. Only three of the 20 relay teams posted a time under 3:09.00. • Marquis Morris took second with a PR of 7.81 in the men's 60m hurdles final. That time moved him from tied for fifth (with Ryan Wilson) to all alone in fifth on USC's all-time list. He advanced to the finals by tying his previous PR of 7.87. • Nick Ponzio improved on each of his throws to finish second in the men's shot put with a mark of 61-11.00 (18.87m). He started with a foul, then went 57-3.00, 58-8.75, 59-4.75, 60-3.25 and 61-11.00. Matthew Katnik entered the finals in third with a best mark of 60-0.50 (18.30m) and fouled in his three attempts to finish fifth. Nathan Bultman placed 14th with a best mark of 53-6.50 (16.32m) coming in his third attempt. • Just'N Thymes placed second in the men's 60m dash final with a PR of 6.70. That time improved his fifth-place standing on USC's all-time list in the event. He moved into fifth from sixth on the list in the prelims with a then-PR of 6.73, second among the qualifiers. Dominic Smallwood had a time of 7.21 to finish 24th and Eric Sloan a time of 7.27 to finish 25th. • Brittany Mann placed third in the women's shot put with a best mark of 54-1.25 (16.49m). That mark is good for second on USC's women's indoor shot put top-10 list. She moved into third on the list with her first throw of 51-11.75 (15.84m), bettered it with a throw of 53-3.50 (16.24m) in her second attempt, moved into second with a mark of 53-10.50 (16.42m) on her fourth attempt and bettered that in her final attempt. • Anna Cockrell finished sixth (8.27) and Dior Hall seventh (8.32) in the women's 60m hurdles final. Hall advanced by winning her prelim heat with a time of 8.09 and Cockrell advanced by placing second in her prelim heat with a time of 8.16, moving her to fifth on USC's all-time list. Jasmyne Graham ran 8.46 which was third in her heat and 11th overall. Hall was competing competitively for the first time since August 1, 2015, after she tore her ACL in December of 2015 which required surgery. • Deanna Hill placed fourth with a time of 7.37 and Ky Westbrook seventh with a time of 7.43 in the women's 60 dash finals. Hill had the second-fastest qualifying time of 7.31 and Westbrook the fifth at 7.38. Destinee Brown placed 11th (7.46), Margaux Jones 24th (PR of 7.72), Madisen Richards 32nd (7.92) and Courtney Corrin 36th (8.26). • Lorea Ibarzabal was fourth in her 800m heat and eighth overall with a time of 2:10.20. That time moved her to sixth place on USC's all-time indoor list. Mikaela Smith had a time of 2:10.33 to take fifth in her heat and finish ninth overall. • Robert Ford ran 1:48.54 to place fifth in his heat and overall in the men's 800m race. • Both Nicolaus Jakowec (4:19.12) and Trent Rule (4:21.62) set personal bests in the men's 1-mile race and finished 20th and 23rd respectively. • Chloe Berry ran 5:09.68 to place 20th and Amber Gore ran 5:14.34 to finish 27th in the women's 1-mile race. Berry moved into seventh and Gore eighth on USC's all-time indoor women's mile top-10 list.
