ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan men's track and field All-America student-athlete and head coach Dave Martin passed away at the age of 79 last month (Aug. 17) of cancer.
Martin was a Wolverine student-athlete from 1959 to 1961. His career highlight came in the spring of his senior year when he finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn NCAA All-America honors. He continued his career after Michigan, running with the Los Angeles Track Club while taking classes at UCLA.
Martin went on to coach at the high school and collegiate levels, including a three-year stint as the head coach at Michigan (1969-71). During that time, the Wolverines earned top-five Big Ten finishes in five of six meets, and the program scored at five of six national meets. Martin spent three years mentoring Jack Harvey, who went on to coach the program to 10 Big Ten championships and six top-10 NCAA finishes.
Martin is survived by his wife Nancy, his brother Pit Martin, and three children, Christy, Matt and Dave, as well as his grandson, Nick.
