Schwanz sets 6K program record in Seattle
The Fresno State senior ran a 6K time of 20:19.30 on Saturday afternoon, breaking the previous program record of 20:30.
SEATTLE – Not running a cross country race in nearly two years did not faze Fresno State's Annemarie Schwanz at the UW Sundodger Invitational on Saturday as the senior went out and set a new program record in the 6K with a time of 20:19.30. The Bulldog missed winning the race by less than a second, finishing third overall, but she broke the school record by 11 seconds, a mark set by former teammate Carina Mendoza in 2013.
For Schwanz, the mark also meant setting a personal best in the event by 15 seconds. With the 6K record in hand, the Neurrupin, Germany native now owns school records in both the 5K and 6K.
Schwanz placed third behind a pair of Washington runners who each came in at 20:18.50. The Huskies, which rank No. 11 nationally won the women's invitational with 18 points, claiming five of the top six spots. Only Schwanz, Hawaii's Camille Campos and a pair of unattached were the only Huskies to not finish in the top 10.
Matt Kwiatkowski was the top finisher on the Bulldog men's team for the second meet in a row, finishing 12th overall and earning the Bulldogs 10 points for his effort. The senior clocked in at 24:38.30 in the 8K invitational. His mark was just under a minute back of the winning time from Washington's Colby Gilbert (23:38.70).
Kwiatkowski was the only attached runner in the meet not competing for Washington (No. 8) State or Washington (No. 31) to place in the top 20.
The Bulldogs next competition is on Oct. 1 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
