SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Rod Jett and Aaron Rios will direct the track and field and cross country programs, respectively, for the upcoming 2016-17 athletic seasons, Athletic Director Mark McGreevy announced. Both had served in interim roles in their first seasons.
”In the all-important responsibility of selecting varsity head coaches we look for men and women who combine a high degree of expertise in their sport with the ability to pass on that expertise consistent with our mission and values in ways that empower our student-athletes now and throughout their lives,” said Athletic Director Mark McGreevy. “Both Coach Jett and Coach Rios have exhibited this essential combination in their interim roles and have done so with impressive commitment and integrity. I’m pleased to announce that they will lead our respective running programs on a permanent basis as each in his own way embodies an exceptional commitment to the physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of our student-athletes.”
Jett, who was a three-time All-American at the University of California-Berkeley and a national runner-up in the 110 hurdles in 1988, will enter his second season at St. Francis in 2017 after leading the program on an interim basis in 2016. An experienced coach with nearly 40 years of experience in the sport as an athlete and coach, Jett directed the program to a second-place finish in the Delta League and a third-place finish at the Sac-Joaquin Section meet, while helping the Troubadours post several school records and top individual performances.
“I am grateful and excited to be able to continue the work we started with St. Francis Track and Field in 2016,” said Jett. “The St. Francis community, from the administration, to the parents, to the outstanding young athletes, has been a joy to work with. I look forward to the challenge of helping maintain the St. Francis legacy of success in the future.”
Under his leadership, St. Francis qualified student-athletes in four events at the CIF State Championships in 2016. The 4×100-meter relay set a school record in finishing 11th, while the 4×400 ranked ninth and recorded the fifth-best time in the state during the season. Senior Ariane Arndt reset her own Sac-Joaquin Section meet record in winning the 400 meters and finished third at the state meet in the 800 meters. She broke her own school record in both events. The team also shined at the Arcadia Invitational, winning three events.
Rios took over the direction of the cross country program last fall. He led the team to second-place finishes at the Delta League and Sac-Joaquin Section meets and the team finished eighth in Division II at the CIF State Championships. Three runners placed among the Top 30 in the race. The Frosh/Soph team won the section title and was second at the league meet. Overall, the team posted a combined 73 personal bests over the course of the season.
“It is a true honor to assume the role of head coach at such a prestigious school and historically rich program,” said Rios. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be a contributor to the outstanding history of St. Francis Cross Country. The support of the administration, families and all of the wonderful young ladies is what makes ours one of the best programs in the Sacramento area. I thank my family and all those who have supported me through this journey.”
Rios will be entering his third season with the school. He originally joined the program as an assistant track coach during the 2015 season and coaches the distance group during track season.
