By Cal Athletics on Mon, June 27, 2016
BERKELEY --- Over the weekend, rising sophomore Kai Benedict secured his place at next month's International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Under-20 Championships in Europe.
Benedict earned his spot after finishing second in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase (8:56.35) Friday afternoon at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in Clovis, Calif. His time was under four seconds off his personal best pace of 8:52.68 from the Pac-12 Championships in mid-May.
The IAAF U20 Championships - formerly known as the World Junior Championships - are scheduled for July 19-24 in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The current event schedule has Benedict beginning his time in Poland on Thursday, July 21 with the heats of the Steeplechase and concluding on the last day of competition (July 24) in the finals.
Five other Golden Bears competed alongside Benedict at this weekend's event. The highlights of the remaining Cal contingent's performances were a pair of sixth place finishes for Jordyn Colter (1500 meters) and Kendall Mader (discus) and new lifetime bests for Malik McMorris (shot put; 57-2.00) and Marsall Godsil (hammer throw; 193-9.00) - all rising sophomores.
