Berdousi And Novy Win Events On First Day Of Trojan Invitational

Tera Novy won the women's discus throw and Katerina Berdousi the women's 3000m to highlight USC's strong showing during the first day of the Trojan Invitational held in Los Angeles, Calif. today (March 18). The majority of the meet will take place tomorrow at Loker Stadium beginning at 10 a.m. The senior All-American Novy opened her outdoor season with an impressive winning discus throw of 190-6 (58.06m), which leads all NCAA throwers in the early season through action today She won the event by nearly 14 feet over graduated Trojan All-American Alexandra Collatz, who took second with a throw of 176-9 (53.88m). In the men's discus throw, sophomore Nick Ponzio was seventh with a best throw of 167-7 (51.09m) and freshman Nathan Bultman was 10th with a mark of 156-3 (47.62m), in his first outdoor meet for USC. Senior Erika Peyton had a PR of 190-7 (58.10m) to take third place in the women's hammer throw. For Peyton, it was a PR of more than 11 feet. Junior Tanya Sapa placed eighth in the event with a throw of 169-11 (51.80m). In the men's hammer throw, redshirt sophomore David Sellens had a PR of 170-4 (51.91m) to place 10th. Bultman had a best throw of 167-8 (51.12m) to finish 11th. Four races were also contested tonight at Loker Stadium, the men's and women's 3000m steeplechases and 3000m races. USC had no one in the steeplechase, but in the third race of the night the senior Berdousi won the women's 3000m with a time of 9:53.58. Senior Jenna Tong was fourth in the 3000m with a PR of 10:02.97 and freshman Sophia Racette, in her first race as a Trojan, took 12th with a time of 10:39.36.
 

 

In the final race of the evening, freshmen Nicolaus Jakowec (8:42.26) and Trent Rule (8:43.38) finished sixth and seventh respectively in the men's 3000m race.
