Bears Finish Indoor Season At NCAAs
Trio Performs Well At Championship Meet in Alabama
BERKELEY --- Three members of the California track & field program represented the Golden Bears over the last two days at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Sophomores Bethan Knights (3000 Meters), Isabella Marten (Triple Jump) & Peter Simon (Shot Put) each gained valuable experience by competing in the two-day event at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
TRIPLE JUMP (RESULTS)
Marten was able to set the pace for the Bears at the championship, earning All-American status with a 7th place mark of 42-11.75 (13.10m) - just over a half-foot shy of her top mark of the season.
Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval praised Marten for her efforts: "Isabella jumped her longest on her final effort to earn her finish today. She showed great focus and adjustments on the super fast mondo surface."
3000 METERS (RESULTS)
Knights clinched the second top-10 finish for the Bears with her 9:09.79 mark in the 3000 Meters. Her time came one second shy of her season best (9:08.77) from the MPSF Championships).
"Bethan ran a tough race tonight with double winner Notre Dame's Molly Seidel leading from gun to finish in a hot pace from the beginning. Bethan has done a marvelous job getting back into competing after returning from her cross country injury," Sandoval said of Knights.
SHOT PUT (RESULTS)
Simon represented the men's program well with a 13th place throw of 60-3.00 in his first ever NCAA meet.
"Peter did a great job today in his first ncaa competition. He had two solid 60 foot throws and competed with a lot of poise. Today was great experience for him and he is only going to get better," Sandoval reflected.
