CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams both finished second Saturday at a tri-meet with Cal and Michigan at Lannigan Field. It marked the second straight year for the meet pitting the track programs from the nation's top public universities against each other.

The third-ranked Cal men won the meet with 142 points, followed by Virginia with 124 points and Michigan with 108 points. The 23rd-ranked Michigan women won with 157 points, followed by Virginia with 132 points and Cal with 85 points. It was the second straight year the Golden Bear men and Wolverine women won the meet.

"It is about the process for this program," said head coach Bryan Fetzer. "Last year, in Berkeley, we struggled to be competitive. Today was a step forward. Obviously we have added a few newcomers in the last year, but we also had some folks step up for us. With the ACC meet so early in the season, the ability to have the right mindset to compete is a big thing. Big points win championships and you need to have athletes that are able to do that. Hopefully this was a good experience for us to get used to competing at a high level."

The Cavalier women won seven of the 19 events contested.

Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) ran the fastest time in the nation in the 400m this season, winning in 52.57. It was a new PR and the second-fastest time in school history. Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.) was third in the event in 54.87, the eighth fastest time in school history and third-fastest by a freshman. Lavender later won the 200m in a time of 23.71, another PR and the fifth fastest time in school history.

Virginia won both of the women's relays at the meet. The Cavalier 4x100 relay of Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas), Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.), Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.) and Lavender won in a time of 45.25, just off their season-best time. The 4x400 relay of Ezumah, Fabrizio, Chaney and Wright won in a time of 3:41.01.





Also winning for the Cavaliers were Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) in the 800m with a time of 2:07.20, Abbey Karin (Byfield, Mass.) in the javelin with a throw of 47.25m, and Rose in the triple jump at 12.45m.
The Virginia men were victorious in six events at the meet.

Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) was a double-winner for the Cavaliers. He made his outdoor season debut in the men's 400m and ran 46.93, one of the top five times in the nation this season, to win the event. He later won the men's 200m with a time of 21.47, just off his PR set last season.

Virginia had the top two in the men's 800m, with Anthony Kostelac (Charlottesville, Va.) winning in 1:50.65 and Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) placing second in 1:52.01, both season-best times.

Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) won the men's shot put with a throw of 18.48m, the second-best in school history. Christian Lavorgna (Jefferson, N.J.) won the men's pole vault with a season-best jump of 13-9.25.

The men's 4x400 relay of David Bartha (Bonyhad, Hungary), Austin Chavez (Annandale, Va.), Kostelac and Hazzard won in a time of 3:15.54.

The Cavaliers return to action at the ACC Championships April 17-19 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
