PALO ALTO Calif./CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The California Golden Bears track & field team concluded their busy weekend on Saturday that saw them compete in three separate meets over two time zones. Cal finished up day two at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, and also competed in the annual triangular meet against Michigan and Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. in a battle between three preeminent public universities in the country. The Cal men won the meet with a total of 142 points, while the women finished third with 85. 13 events were claimed by the Golden Bears, nine of which were won by the men. In addition, 12 PR’s were set on Saturday, in a very productive day for the Bears.

Cal finished one-two in the 100-meters, as redshirt seniors Tom Blocker (10.48) and Dash Oliver (10.61) showed very well for the Bears in Charlottesville. Oliver set one of 13 PR’s on the days for California, surpassing his 2013 legal best of 10.73. Oliver and Blocker were also part of the 4x100-meter relay team for Cal, consisting of Blocker, Oliver, senior Milan Ristic and redshirt junior Dan Davis, who won the event with a time of 40.16, Cal’s best on the season. Ristic also won the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of 14.34 and also placed second in the 200-meters with a time of 21:48.

Sophomore Thomas Joyce set a new PR in the 1500-meters, winning the event with a time of 3:45.31, surpassing his previous best of 3:50.31 at the Tri-Meet in Berkeley last year. In the 5000-meters, junior Chris Walden claimed the event with a PR of his own, clocking in at 14:07.09. That was over 11 seconds better than his previous best mark, also set at the Tri-Meet in Berkeley in April of 2013.

Though sophomore Randy Bermea won the 400-meter hurdles, he was shy of his own PR in the event of 51.31. Fourth place finisher, junior Joost de Jong did however set one himself, with a time of 54.61.

On the field side of things, senior Nick Ridge won the high jump, clearing a height of 6-10.75 (2.10m), while redshirt sophomore Jonte Grant claimed the triple jump crown with a leap of 50-2.50 (15.30m). Cal’s throwers also had a nice afternoon, as redshirt senior Derek White nearly topped his PR, and third best performance in school history in the hammer throw with a mark Saturday of 210-7 (64.18m). He placed second, while teammate CJ Nwuzi did break new ground with a PR toss of 185-7 (56.57m), surpassing his previous best set in Sacramento just two weeks ago. White laid claim to the discus title, setting a new personal best with a throw of 191-0 (58.22m), besting his previous mark of 187-6, set at the Pac-12 Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Senior Charnell Price clocked an 11.74 on her way to the 100-meter title on Saturday. Fellow senior Angelica Weaver set a new PR in the 100-meter hurdles, running a time of 14.50, finishing fourth. She also won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.18 in her busy afternoon, competing on the 4x400-meter relay team as well. Newcomer Khala Taylor set an outdoor season-best in the 400-meters, clocking a time of 57.15, surpassing her mark of 58.29 in the outdoor opener in March at Edwards Stadium.

Freshman Megan Bordes also set a new PR in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing fourth with a time of 11:04.41, beating her previous best from the Outdoor Opener in Berkeley by more than six seconds.

Two more event-winners came in field events for the Bears, as redshirt senior Malaina Payton leapt a season-best distance of 21-0.00 (6.40m) on her final attempt to win the long jump. Teammate and junior Jaci Powell finished third, with a jump of 18-8.75 (5.71m). High jumper Grace Beaudoin also claimed her event, clearing a mark of 5-7.00 (1.70m) for her victory, narrowly missing on what would have been a new PR height of 5-10.00 (1.78m).

In Palo Alto on day two of the Stanford Invitational, sophomore Molly Babcock set a new PR in the 800-meters with a time of 2:19.76, besting her previous mark by nearly four seconds.

The Golden Bears return to Berkeley to host the 120th Big Meet at Edwards Stadium on Saturday, April 12. Be sure to keep an eye on CalBears.com for the schedule of events and live stats links.
