TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama track and field team won 14 events and set more than a dozen personal bests at the inaugural Border Clash at Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium Friday. The Crimson Tide had 10 performances in nine events land in the school's all-time top 10 during the day-long meet, which pitted teams from the state of Alabama (Alabama, Auburn and Samford) against teams from the state of Mississippi (Mississippi, Mississippi State and Southern Mississippi).
The state of Mississippi topped the men's standings by a score of 107-92, while the state of Alabama won the women's competition 121-76.
"It was a great meet from a team standpoint," said Waters. "We were able to pick up quite a few victories and set some new personal records, and we competed really well. It was a unique and fun meet just by the way it was set up, and I think that helped create some quality competition from both states. I'm pleased with our performances, and hopefully this gives us some good momentum heading into the Mt. SAC Relays next weekend."
Alabama will cross the country next weekend for the Mt. SAC Relays, one of the world's premier track and field meets, held annually at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California.

RUNNING EVENTS
Men
100 Meters - Diondre Batson of Alabama (American River College, Sacramento, CA) was dominant in the men's 100-meter dash, running a wind-aided (2.3 meters per second) time of 10.01. That's the second-fastest time in school history and matches his PR set last June at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Alabama's Akeem Haynes was second in 10.20, well ahead of his PR of 10.37. Alex Sanders of Alabama was fourth in 10.32. Batson bettered the facility record of 10.07 set by LSU's Trindon Holliday in 2007.
400 Meters - Brandon McBride of Mississippi State beat a field of 13 runners in the two-heat final of the men's 400 meters, running 46.82 seconds for the victory. Alabama's Dwight Davis was second in 47.04 with Elbert Rogers of Southern Mississippi third in 47.05. Alex Amankwah was fifth in 47.38.
400-Meter Hurdles - Mississippi State's Javon Davis took a commanding victory in the men's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.55 seconds. Scottie Hearn of MSU was second in 53.18 with Adam Civitano of Auburn third (53.87). For Alabama, Brennan Parks was fifth in 54.83 as the top five times ran in the first heat of the two-heat final.
800 Meters - Mississippi's Sean Tobin overtook Alabama's Jacopo Lahbi down the final stretch to win the men's 800 meters in 1:47.99. Samford's Brandon Hazouri was second in 1:48.54 with finishing Lahbi third in 1:48.69, the 10th-fastest time in Alabama history. The race's top four finishers (Tobin, Hazouri, Lahbi and Alabama's Matt Airola (American River College, Sacramento, CA) all ran in the first heat of the two-heat final as Tobin defeated a field of 15 competitors. Alabama's Ken Taylor, a 400-meter specialist, took the field out for a fast 600 meters before leaving the race, setting up the final duel between Tobin, Hazouri and Lahbi.
1,500 Meters - A duel by Mississippi's Robert Domanic and Alabama's Parker Deuel (San Ramon Valley HS, Danville, CA) resulted in a tight victory for Domanic, who broke the tape in 3:47.01. Deuel was second in a PR of 3:47.82, setting a PR by approximately 6 seconds. Other Alabama competitors were Payton Ballard (6th, 3:55.94) and Jeff Edmondson (7th, 3:58.59).
3,000-Meter Steeplechase - Crimson Tide sophomore Eric Sivill took a commanding lead early and was never challenged in winning the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:30.73. Trevor Gilley of Ole Miss was second (9:47.78) with Curtis Kelly of Mississippi State third (9:51.84).
4x400-Meter Relay - The Alabama men's 4x400-meter relay quartet of Dwight Davis, Alex Amankwah, Jacopo Lahbi and Ken Taylor ran a strong, consistent race in posting its fastest time of the season, breaking the tape in 3:08.22 with Mississippi State second in 3:09.08 and Ole Miss third in 3:09.92. The race was tight through the first leg with Alabama's Davis handing off to Amankwah with a slight lead ahead of Ole Miss and Mississippi State in a virtual dead heat. Amankwah extended the Alabama lead on the second leg before passing off to Jacopo Lahbi with a three-meter edge ahead of Ole Miss with State about 10 meters back. Lahbi gave the baton to Ken Taylor for the final leg with a five-meter advantage over the Rebels and the diminutive Taylor sustained the lead throughout before extending it down the final straightaway on strong anchor leg that sealed the victory for the Crimson Tide.
Women
100 Meters - Alabama senior Remona Burchell ran the third-fastest 100-meter dash in school history when she clocked an event-winning 11.23. Burchell distanced herself from runner-up Shekara Martin (11.72) of Auburn and the field by the 50-meter mark of the first heat. Burchell's time is the second-best wind-legal time in the country this season. Alabama junior Dominique Kimpel placed fourth with a time of 11.84, while Tide senior Sarah Thomas finished sixth with a season-best 11.97.
200 Meters - Auburn's V'alonee Robinson won the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.01. Alabama's Sarah Thomas (24.57) finished third, just behind Mississippi's Breanna Tate (24.53). Alabama freshman Brianna Sims clocked a season-best 24.96 to finish fifth.
400 Meters - Alabama finished 1-2 in the women's 400-meter dash, as senior Yanique Malcolm and freshman Alex Gholston finished first and second, respectively. Malcolm (54.06) and Gholston (54.90) each set personal records in the process. Alabama senior Dacia Mays finished sixth with a time of 57.53.
800 Meters - Samford's Marie Demedicis won the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.67. Auburn sophomore Sage Blackwell (2:12.79) finished second, just ahead of Alabama senior Aubrielle Wright (2:13.55).
1,500 Meters - Alabama sophomore Kimberley Ficenec shattered her previous personal record by six seconds when she clocked a time of 4:21.44 to finish second in the women's 1,500-meter run. Meropi Panagiotou placed third in a time of 4:21.44. Ficenec's time ranks sixth in Alabama history, while Panagiotou's time ranks ninth. Freshman Olivia Ortiz (4:40.00), freshman Anna Leinheiser (4:41.19) and senior Claire Turner (4:42.58) each set personal records. Sophomore Susie Kemper (4:42.84) also competed for the Tide.
3,000-meter Steeplechase - Freshman Hannah Waggoner won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:02.33--the seventh-fastest time in school history and a new personal best.
100-meter Hurdles - Yvana Hepburn-Bailey, an unattached competitor, finished first overall in the women's 100-meter hurdles, while Mississippi State sophomore Keisha Wallace (13.14) was the top collegiate finisher. Alabama redshirt freshman Passion Gamble ran a personal-best 14.24.
400-meter Hurdles - Alabama senior Shani Chandler placed fifth in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.59. Auburn's Danielle Hill won the event in a time of 58.85.
4x100-Meter Relay - Alabama's team of Quanesha Burks, Remona Burchell, Dominique Kimpel and Sarah Thomas won the women's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.15, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
4x400-Meter Relay - Alabama's team of Brianna Sims, Dominique Kimpel, Alex Gholston and Yanique Malcolm finished first in the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:38.29, which ranks seventh in school history. Auburn placed second in the event with a time of 3:41.16. Alabama's second team dropped the baton and did not finish the event.

Men
Hammer - Charodd Richardson of Alabama set a new personal best (PR) in winning the hammer throw with a mark of 63.08 meters (206 feet, 11 inches), improving his PR by 10 inches. Richardson outdistanced runner-up Nathan Loe of Ole Miss by 6.48 meters (21 feet, 3 inches) as Loe was second at 56.60 (185-8).
Discus - Hayden Reed of Alabama won the men's discus with a personal-best performance, posting a winning mark of 60.68m (199-1), well ahead of runner-up Joe Williams of Alabama (57.78m/177-4). Reed's mark improved his PR (193-10) by more than 5 feet from his prior PR set last week and gave him a victory for the third consecutive meet. Reed established the lead on his first throw, an effort of 58.65, before getting the clincher on his second toss and fouling on the subsequent four tries. Reed's winning mark ranks third on the all-time Alabama javelin performances list.
Shot Put - Alabama's Hayden Reed won the men's shot put with a best effort that ranks sixth all-time in Alabama history at 18.68 meters (61 feet, 3.50 inches). Reed's winning effort came on his sixth and final attempt of the night. Reed's series: 17.35.56-11.25; 17.74/58-2.50; 18.01/59-1.25; 18.28/59-11.75; and 18.68/61-3.50. Marcus Popenfoose of Auburn was second (18.13/59-5.75) with Robert Collingwood of Southern Miss third (17.95/58-10.75). The Crimson Tide's Kyle Felpel was fourth with a best of 17.82/58-5.75. Alabama's Nathan Karr was seventh (15.70/51-6.25).
Javelin - Austin Britton of Mississippi State won the men's javelin with a throw of 62.46 meters (204 feet, 11 inches) on his second attempt. Kevin Shannon of Alabama was third with a best of 60.02 (196-11). Ryan Glosson of Alabama finished eight with a best effort of 39.51 (129-7).
Long Jump - Ole Miss senior Ricky Robertson leaded 7.64 meters (25 feet, 0.75 inches) on his fifth attempt to overtake teammate Malcolm Davis (7.51/24-7.75) for the victory. Alabama's Kamal Fuller was third at 7.35 (24-1.50) with Josh McCullan of Alabama in fourth (7.01/23-0) and the Tide's Nathan Vardaman in fifth (6.93/22-9).
Triple Jump - Phillip Young of Ole Miss won the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.64 meters (51 feet, 3.75 inches) as he produced a series of four legal jumps in six attempts with all four of more than 50 feet in duration. Young's teammate, Ricky Robertson, was second (15.60/51-2.25) with Alabama's Imani Brown third (15.30/50-2.50) and the Tide's George Freiberger fourth (14.05/46-1.25).
High Jump - Alabama's Justin Fondren cleared 2.15/7-0.50 to win the men's high jump ahead of Southern Miss's Courtland Wells (2.10/6-10.75). Fondren entered action on the event's second height (2.00/6-6.75) and cleared it on his first try. He then cleared 2.05/6-8.75 on his first attempt before eclipsing 2.10/6-10 on his second try. A clearance on his second attempt at 2.15/7-0.50 clinched the victory and he went on to attempt 2.22/7-3.25, but could not clear that height.
Pole Vault - Mississippi junior Sam Kendricks won the men's pole vault handily, clearing 5.50 meters (18 feet, 0.50 inches), more than 2 feet ahead of the closest competitor. Alabama's Ryan Pierson was sixth with a clearance of 4.55 (14-11).
Women
Hammer - Samford's Emily Allen won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 59.59 meters (195 feet, 6 inches), while Alabama junior Nia Barnes took runner-up with a mark of 55.89 meters (183 feet, 4 inches).
Discus - Auburn's Rachel Dincoff (50.58 meters/165 feet, 11 inches) edged Southern Mississippi's Rachel Polk (49.60 meters/162 feet, 9 inches) to win the women's discus throw. Alabama freshman Berta Ameliniate set a personal record of 48.09 meters (157 feet, 9 inches) en route to a fourth-place finish. Junior Candicea Bernard placed fifth with a mark of 45.02 meters (147 feet, 8 inches).
Shot Put - Auburn sophomore Rachel Dincoff won her second event of the evening when she topped the women's shot put standings with a mark of 15.89 meters (52 feet, 1.75 inches). Alabama junior Candicea Bernard finished runner-up with a season-best throw of 15.41 meters (50 feet, 6.75 inches). Sophomore Lacey Dent also competed for the Tide and finished ninth with a mark of 11.11 meters (36 feet, 5.5 inches).
Javelin - Alabama junior Nia Barnes won the javelin throw with a mark of 42.80 meters (140 feet, 5 inches.) Barnes' first attempt spanned 34.36 meters (112-9), while her second attempt covered 40.89 meters (134-2). She fouled on her third and fourth attempts. She launched her winning throw on her fifth attempt before fouling on her sixth and final attempt.
Pole Vault - Alabama freshman Lakan Taylor won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.20 meters (13 feet, 9.25 inches), which is tied for tenth-best in school history. Tide teammate Autumn Conn, a sophomore, finished runner-up after clearing 3.87 meters (12 feet, 8.25 inches). Freshman Britainy Smith cleared 3.57 meters (11 feet, 8.50 inches) for the Tide. Sophomore Anna Rawles no-heighted.
Long Jump - Mississippi junior Kierra White edged Alabama freshman Quanesha Burks to win the women's long jump. Burks jumped 6.17 meters (20 feet, 3 inches) on her second attempt and led the event heading into the final round, but White covered a wind-aided 6.25 meters (20 feet, 6.25 inches) on her sixth and final attempt to take first place.
Triple Jump - Auburn freshman Marshay Ryan won the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.76 meters (41 feet, 10.50 inches). Alabama junior Merilyn Uudmae finished runner-up with a season-best mark of 12.46m (40 feet, 10.50 inches), which ranks ninth on the school's all-time top 10 list.
