Member Profile: Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K
The Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K is Jamaica's premier marathon event, attracting visitors from over 34 different countries visiting the island during the three-day event annually. It has earned the reputation of being uniquely Jamaican and an oddity in an island internationally recognized as the "sprint factory."
What started as a loose collection of runners at the Mona Dam, affectionately called "The Dam" in Jamaica's capital city Kingston, became a club - the Jamdammers - in June 1995. Over the years, the club has grown both in size and stature, re-writing the book on road racing in Jamaica.
The annual Reggae Marathon Grand Prix Series presented by the Jamdammers and the main event - The Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K - have become fixtures on local and international road race calendars. This year's events will be held on December 6.
During the last thirteen years, Reggae Marathon has been included in the world's top ten Marathon events over five times, twice included in the Lonely Planet's top ten places to run, in New York's writer Mark Wollin's newspaper column "Glancing Askance," the London Paper's list of the world's top ten Marathon events, and the UK Telegraph also listed Reggae Marathon among the world's top ten marathon events.
Various fund raising charities and other running groups have participated over the years, such as The American Stroke Association, the Joints in Motion groups from both the U.S., and Canadian chapters of the Arthritis Association, and Reggae Runnerz. Reggae Marathon's local charity partner is the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, which regularly fields a team.
Reggae Marathon has always been an internationally certified event, which ensures that its participants benefit from a unique world-class experience in Negril. The use of modern technologies such as MyLaps Bib Tag Timing allow for accurate results and webcams have enabled persons in any part of the globe to keep track of participants' progress and results during the event
Reggae Marathon begins with Registration and packet pick-up on the Thursday before the race. Registration and packet pick-up continue the Friday, after which the evening closes before race day with the World's Best Pasta Party. This features world-renown chefs from participating hotels in Negril creating tantalizing delights; a favorite and a highpoint of race weekend.
The signature lit torches, herald the start of Race Day at 5: 15 A.M on the Saturday. After enjoying a looped course, accompanied by entertainment provided by some of the best in Reggae talent, participants can end with a run into the sea along Negril's iconic white sand beach.
