2014 TCS New York City Marathon Applications Number Over 134,000

NEW YORK - The 2014 TCS New York City Marathon, set for Sunday, November 2, 2014, will feature a field of runners selected from more than 134,000 applications, it was announced by Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners. An estimated 47,500 to 50,000 runners are expected to participate in the 44th running of the race, which tours 26.2 miles of spectator-lined streets in New York City's five boroughs.

"This is always one of the most exciting days of the marathon season," said Wittenberg. "Tens of thousands of runners from around the world now start to focus on their personal journey around New York City's five boroughs. The race itself is only one day, but the experience-from physical training to mental preparation to fundraising for some-is a journey that lasts for months and is often an experience of a lifetime."

Dallas Marathon Announces Special 2014 Registration Offer for 2013 Registrants

DALLAS - The MetroPCS Dallas Marathon announced its special offer to all regist rants of the canceled 2013 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon. Runners registered for the 2013 event will have the opportunity to register for the 2014 MetroPCS Marathon, Half Marathon, 5-Person Relay or SMU Cox Corporate Relay Challenge presented by Behringer at exclusive rates of $65, $50 and $200 per relay team, respectively. This offer is available to 2013 registrants from April 2 to April 30, 2014.

"The cancellation presented an array of challenges for our organization, and we are pleased to be in a position today to make good on the promise of presenting a special offer to our runners," said Patrick Byerly, president of the Dallas Marathon.

"We evaluated all possible options to determine the most fiscally responsible scenario for our runners, organization and our beneficiary, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, and are confident our runners will not find a comparable registration offer at any race of similar size in the surrounding region - or nationwide - in 2014."

Running USA Annual Half-Marathon Report

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - (April 6, 2014) - Since 2003, per Running USA State of
the Sport Reports, the half-marathon has been the fastest growing standard distance in the United States

with a 12.5% annual finisher growth rate, and moreover, from 2006-12, the number of 13.1 mile finishers grew a noteworthy 10% or more each year. In 2013 that historic growth rate slowed as U.S. half-marathons had an estimated 1.96 million finishers (a new high) with a solid 6% increase from 2012 (1,850,000 vs. 1,960,000), but not nearly as impressive as the 24% record rise in both 2009 and 2010. Also, in the same 1,135 U.S. half-marathons for 2012 vs. 2013, there was a 1.6% finisher increase (1,528,938 vs. 1,552,696). By comparison, in the same 1,136 U.S. half-marathons for 2011 vs. 2012, there was a 5.1% finisher increase (1,522,637 vs. 1,599,838).

There were several factors why there was a single digit percent increase in U.S. half-marathon finishers. First, in 2013, like some U.S. marathons, several half-marathons were also impacted by weather cancellations including larger ones such as MetroPCS Dallas and St. Jude Memphis, both the same weekend in December. Second, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series reported fewer finishers than the previous year. Third, there were only two inaugural half-marathons with more than 5,000 finishers compared to a record six in 2012 including two with more than 10,000 finishers. Collectively the aforementioned reduced the 2013 U.S. half-marathon count by an estimated 60,000 finishers.
