UW Final Qualifer Doesn't Help Bears' Chances

No Improvements Seen by 6 Cal Representatives at Meet

Taylor Kientzel

March 1, 2013

SEATTLE, Wash. - Cal sent six runners, jumpers and throwers to the UW Final Qualifier looking for a last chance to reach the NCAA Indoor Championships, but none of the Golden Bears improved on their previous marks. As a result, Cal expects to have one entrant at the national meet - Ray Stewart in the men's 60-meter hurdles.

In Friday's field held at the Dempsey Indoor Facility, Collin Jarvis completed the mile in 4:03.76, almost a second behind his time from last week's MPSF Championships, while in the triple jump, Taylor Kientzel went 48-7.50 on his first attempt, but passed on his final five tries.

Although high jumper Brian Carmichael cleared 7-1.00, he could not get over the bar at 7-3. Nick Ridge, who set a PR of 7-3 last weekend, struggled and saw his night end at 6-7. Both needed a mark of at least 7-3.25 to merit NCAA consideration.

Shelby Ashe (64-2.50) and Chioma Amaechi (62-4.50) surpassed 60 feet in the women's weight throw, but neither distance was enough to move on. Amaechi set a school record of 67-2.00 earlier in the year, and Ashe established a freshman mark of 66-1.50 at the MPSF meet.

Stewart set a Cal record in the 60-meter hurdles of 7.68, which ranked seventh nationally before a host of last-chance meets around the country. With the top 16 from each event earning berths to the NCAA Championships, Stewart should be representing the Bears in Fayetteville, Ark., when the field is officially announced.

The Bears begin their outdoor season Saturday at the Stanford opener. Competition runs from 12 noon until approximately 4 p.m.
