Gray, Istnick Successfully Defend USA 50K Road Titles

LLOYD'S HARBOR, NY - Joe Gray, 29, of Renton, Wash. came close to the course record held by Michael Wardian, at Caumsett Park in the 2013 USA 50K Road Championships, coming up just 15 seconds short on Sunday, March 3.

Gray, a professional runner, sponsored by Scott Sports and Mio Global, among others, finished in two hours, 55 minutes, 19 seconds to repeat as champion.

"The competition was good, but wish they'd have been a little closer, to push me to break the record," Gray said.

The Oklahoma State graduate says he will return in 2014 to try to record a three-peat title performance. Gray will make his marathon debut at this year's Boston Marathon in April.

Shanna Ailes Istnick, 34, of Kent, Ohio, led the women's field from start to finish in a time of 3:33:04, good enough for sixth overall to win her second consecutive national 50K title.

Moat, Yates Capture 2013 USA 50 Mile Trail Championships
ROCKSPRINGS, Texas - The 2013 USA 50 Mile Trail Championships was held at the Nueces Endurance 50 Mile Trail Run, organized by race directors Joe and Joyce Prusaitis, on Saturday, March 2. Cody Moat and Michele Yates would emerge as titlists on what turned out to be a beautiful Texas day for trail running.

In the women's race, Yates (above) decided to get away in the darkness of the first hour of the race. She separated herself from the field and completed loop one in a time she questioned whether she could maintain. But maintain she did, continuing to distance herself from all competitors and breaking her own course record by 32 minutes. Her finishing time of 6 hours, 53 minutes, 25 seconds was good for 4th place overall.

This was Michele's second consecutive national title with her recent 100K win two months ago and third national title overall. She is also the defending US 50 Mile champion.

Pool, Meyer Win 35th Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon

NAPA, Calif. - (March 3, 2013) - Kevin Pool of Folsom, Calif. didn't plan on winning the 35th Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon. He entered the 26.2-mile race through the scenic Napa Valley wine-growing region as a training run in preparation for this coming April's Boston Marathon. On the other hand, San Francisco's Michelle Meyer set a goal of recording a fast time, and possibly a women's win, at Napa. Both Pool and Meyer emerged victorious in close contests and were crowned Road Runners Club of America national marathon champions. The marathon served as Road Runners Club of America's 2013 National Marathon Championship.
Pool, 30, broke the finish line tape at Napa's Vintage High School in 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 58 seconds, the seventh fastest winning men's time in the 35-year history of the event. Meyer's time of 2:43:11 is the fourth fastest ever by a woman on the scenic, gently rolling, point-to-point course. The rural race route from Calistoga to Napa has not changed since the event's inaugural running.

Pool, a veteran of nine previous marathons, notched his victory despite giving the other top men in the field an unintentional 40-second handicap. He was in the port-a-potty when the 7 a.m. starting gun sounded as Cheyne Inman (Vacaville, Calif.) assumed a solo early lead and held it until Pool and Frank Corrigan (Port Costa, Calif.) caught him near the 23 mile point.
