Joan Samuelson, Greg Meyer, and Amby Burfoot to Run 2013 Boston Marathon
BOSTON - With less than one month until the 117th Boston Marathon, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced that several former champions of the Boston Marathon will return to Boston to participate in events surrounding this year's running of the historic race. The 117th running of the world's oldest annual marathon will take place on Monday, April 15, 2013.

Inaugural Olympic gold medalist Joan Samuelson will run this year's Boston Marathon. Samuelson, 55, won the 1979 and 1983 Boston Marathons before winning the Olympic Games Marathon in Los Angeles in 1984. She will return to Boston on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of her 1983 victory, the race in which she established a world record (two hours, 22 minutes, 43 seconds). Samuelson has run the previous two Boston Marathons (2:51:29 in 2011; 3:28:08 in 2012), including last year under challenging conditions (i.e., extremely warm weather) while starting with her daughter, Abby. She is a member of principal sponsor John Hancock Financial Services' Elite Athlete Team and is one of the sport's most recognizable and popular personalities. Samuelson has remained competitive for more than three decades.

Also returning to run this year's Boston Marathon are Greg Meyer and Amby Burfoot. Like Samuelson, Meyer will mark the 30th anniversary of his 1983 Boston Marathon victory and will also be a member of John Hancock's Elite Athlete Team.

USA Senior Men's Team Takes Second at 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland - (March 24, 2013) - Kenya's
Japhet Korir was a surprise winner of the senior men's title at
the 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships on Sunday, pocketing $30,000.
The Team USA senior men's team, buoyed by an impressive sixth place finish from Ben True (Hanover, N.H.), won a silver medal, their first time on the podium since 1984 in East Rutherford, N.J., when Pat Porter led the squad to a second place finish behind Ethiopia.

True's sixth place was best American placing in the senior men's race since Todd Williams was ninth in 1995 in Durham, England.

Korir, in only his third race in the last nine months after getting badly spiked in the Kenyan trials for the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships last June, also become the youngest ever senior champion and only the second teenager to win the long race, following in the footsteps of the prodigious Kenenisa Bekele.

True, who won the 2013 U.S. 15K championship earlier this month, was fifth at the USA Cross Country Championships in February.

The U.S. had three other athletes in the top 19 to seal their podium performance.
Chris Derrick was 10th in 33:23,
Ryan Vail was 17th in 33:42, and
Bobby Mack was 18th in 33:49. The last time Team USA had two men finish in the top ten was in 1986 in Neuchatel, Switzerland, when Pat Porter finished sixth, and John Easker was tenth.

Rounding out the U.S. team, Elliott Heath was 30th in 34:11 and James Strang finished in 37th place in 34:20.

In the women's senior race,

Neely Spence Gracey finished 13th (25:08) to place as top non-African and lead the U.S. team.

Behind Gracey were Emily Infeld and Mattie Suver who finished 21st and 26th, respectively, with times of 25:27 and 25:41. 2012 US Olympian Kim Conley was 30th to round out the USA scorers with a time of 25:45.

Deena Kastor, the 2004 Olympic marathon bronze medalist, competing in her tenth career world cross country championships, finished 34th in 25:52, and Delilah DiCrescenzo was 47th in 26:05.

Kenya's Emily Chebet, 27, enjoyed an impressive return to the top of the medals podium in winning her second global title. Chebet led the Kenyan outfit to emphatic gold medal-winning display, with 19 points to Ethiopia's 48.

The U.S. senior women's team placed fourth with the junior men fifth and the junior women sixth.
