Running USA Annual Marathon Report

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (March 13, 2013) - Is the bloom gone from the marathon? A question asked after modest U.S. marathon finisher growth in 2011 compared to previous years. For the first time since 2001, according to Running USA, the estimated number of U.S. marathon finishers declined from a record 518,000 in 2011 to 487,000 in 2012 (a 6% decrease), but like 2001, most of the decline can be attributed to a unique situation; in 2001, it was post-9/11 travel impacting fall marathons, and in 2012, the cancellation of the ING New York City Marathon, the world's largest marathon with more than 47,000 finishers or 9% of the 2011 overall finisher total.

If the sold-out NYC Marathon had been held, there is no doubt that the 2012 overall marathon finisher total would have exceeded the 2011 record of 518,000. In addition, overall, there was a 1.6% increase in finishers from the same 388 U.S. marathons for 2011 and 2012 (464,122 vs. 471,595); a slight percent increase (1%) from the same 367 marathons in 2010 and 2011 (495,135 vs. 500,206).

Over the past 15 years, U.S. marathons collectively have averaged just under 2.5% finisher growth per year so although 2012's growth rate of 1.6% for the same marathons for both years was below the annual average, it was not a significant decline. In short, it is premature, at this time, to say that U.S. marathon growth has lost its bloom, and also, some of the marathon's smaller overall finisher percent growth over the past two years can be attributed to the popularity of the half-marathon, the fastest growing road race distance in America since 2003 (and 2012 was another record finisher year for the 13.1 mile).

Saucony Run for Good Foundation Announces Grant Recipients
LEXINGTON, Mass. - The Saucony Run for Good Foundation, established to help combat childhood obesity by providing financial support to community-based youth running or athletic programs, has announced its latest round of grant winners. This comes as the nation marks the third anniversary of Let's Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by
First Lady Michelle Obama to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation. Since 2006, the Saucony Run For Good Foundation has awarded over one million dollars to nearly 120 schools and community organizations−all dedicated to preventing childhood obesity through running and an active lifestyle.

Saucony is inviting the running community to help double the brand's donations to the selected kids' running programs by logging miles run or walked on Saucony Run4Good™, the running industry's first-ever iPhone app dedicated to battling childhood obesity. Over the next six months, the selected grant recipients will each be a monthly feature on the app. When a predetermined community mileage goal is reached during the recipient's featured month, Saucony will double its contribution to the selected organization, inspiring individual runners to both unite over their passion for running and combat the childhood obesity epidemic. The free Saucony Run4Good app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or at: saucony.com/run4good.

New Balance Pushes the Limits of Innovation with 3D Printing

BOSTON - Global athletic leader
New Balance is proud to announce a significant advancement in the use of 3D printing to customize high performance products for athletes. Utilizing a proprietary process, the brand is able to produce spike plates customized to the individual needs and desires of their elite athletes. At the New Balance Games in January 2013, Team New Balance athlete, Jack Bolas, became the first ever track athlete to compete in customized, 3D printed plates.

New Balance has developed a proprietary process for utilizing a runner's individual biomechanical data to create hyper-customized spike plates designed to improve performance. The process requires race simulation biomechanical data which the New Balance Sports Research Lab collects using a force plate, in-shoe sensors and a motion capture system. Advanced algorithms and software are then applied to translate this data into custom 3D printed spike designs.
