STANFORD - California got the 2013 outdoor season underway Saturday at the Stanford Opener and came away with 18 event victories. A pair of Golden Bears earned two wins apiece - Charnell Price in the 100 and 200 meters and Randy Bermea in the 110 and 400 hurdles.

The meet featured representatives from Cal, Stanford, UC Davis, San Francisco and Fresno State, along with several non-collegiate athletes. The Bears concentrated on the track and jumps, as no throwers made the trip to Stanford after a long indoor season.

"I thought we had a number of good performances, and our young athletes who didn't run indoors had an opportunity to wear the Blue and Gold for the first time," said Tony Sandoval, Cal's director of track & field.

Price prevailed in the women's 100 meters in 11.87, then came back later in the afternoon to claim the 200 in 24.27. Bermea, a freshman who was the Texas state high school champion in the 300-meter hurdles, took home first place in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.58 and won the 400-meter event in 52.89.

In the men's 200 meters, Tom Blocker took first place in a PR 21.62, while James Slater had a 13-second improvement from his previous best in winning the 3000 meters in 8:24.10.

Freshman Noel Frazier, the 2012 California state high school champion out of San Ramon's California HS, made his Golden Bear debut with a victory in the high jump and a clearance of 6-11.75 to surpass his lifetime best. Senior Mike Tracy was second with a PR 6-10.75.

Alima Kamara began her outdoor campaign with an impressive 54.04 in winning the women's 400 meters, a time that was just off her season best of 53.87 from last spring.

Another newcomer, freshman Victoria Rische, captured the women's pole vault at 12-9.50. During the indoor season, she had a best of 12-11 at the MPSF Championships last weekend.

Sydney Gray just missed a winning the women's 1500 meters, but set a lifetime best with a time of 4:27.94. In the men's race, former Bear Michael Coe, running unattached, took first in 3:52.79.

Cal's next outdoor competition is at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento March 16.
