Incoming frosh Derek Eager and heptathlete Ryann Krais Shine At USAs

Competition concluded on Sunday after five days of track and field action at the USATF Senior/National Championships in Des Moines, IA where Bruins from the past, present and future shined.

Junior-to-be Ryann Krais had a career performance in the heptathlon as she scored a lifetime-best of 5693 in the seven event competition to place seventh overall. That score moves her from sixth to fifth all-time in UCLA history. During the two days of the heptathlon, Krais posted season-best performances in the 200m, high jump and long jump, as well as won the 800m.

She was 10th in the 100m hurdles (14.09/966 pts.), tied for sixth in the high jump (5-8.75/916 pts), 15th in the shot put (32-1.50/516 pts.) and 13th in the 200m (25.25/864 pts.) for a day one total of 3262 points. On Saturday, she opened the day with a big performance in the long jump with a mark of 20-1.75 (893 pts.) for the third-best jump of the day. She was then sixth in the javelin with a solid throw of 122-9 (618 pts.) and then concluded the competition with a winning run in the 800m (2:13.07/920 pts.)

Katy Viuf tied for ninth in the senior pole vault with a clearance of 14-1.25, while Tori Pena tied for 13th with a mark of 13-7.25. Danielle Watson had a career day in the long jump as she posted a mark of 21-0 to finish 11th overall. She ends her Bruin career ranked ninth all-time in the long jump.

In the men's senior 800m, Cory Primm advanced to the semifinal round and finished 12th overall (1:47.77). Marco Anzures was 23rd in the senior 10,000m with a time of 32:15.42.

In the women's senior 400m hurdles, Nicole Leach, MacKenzie Hill and Sheena Tosta were in action. Leach finished second overall in the final with a time of 55.83 after running 56.56 in both the prelims and semifinal rounds. Hill finished eighth in the final with a time of 57.33 (she ran 56.89 in the semis). Tosta ran in the opening round and had the top qualifier into the semis, 56.47, but pulled out of the race. She did compete in all rounds of the 100m hurdles, finishing seventh in the final with a time of 13.50 (ran 13.32 in prelims and 13.35 in semis).

Jessica Cosby was second in the women's hammer throw with a solid toss of 233-9. Craig Everhart finished 15th in the 400m semifinal with a time of 47.01 (he ran 46.30 in prelims).

In the junior portion of the meet, incoming freshman Derek Eager was on fire in the javelin as he snagged a spot on the USA roster for the World Junior Championships (held July 19-25 in Moncton, Canada). Eager stood in third heading into the final round behind Sam Crouser, the No. 1 javelin thrower in the nation. On his final toss, Eager overtook Crouser for second-place and the final spot on the world roster with a throw of 230-6. Eager also finished 11th in the discus with a throw of 174-10. Redshirt freshman Matt Kosecki, also competing in the discus, finished fourth wtih a toss of 182-6.

Incoming frosh Alec Faldermeyer just missed a spot on the U.S. roster in the hammer as he finished third with a toss of 219-5.





Paisley Pettway, an incoming freshman on the women's team, finished sixth in the 800m final with a time of 2:09.69.
