In brief: Pena to join Irish ranks for Euro bid
Tuesday June 29 2010
Tori Pena will mean very little to Irish athletics followers but she is likely to be included in the team for the European Championships in Barcelona next month.
Pena was born in California but her grandparents hail from Derry and is able to represent Ireland in any of the major championships for which she qualifies.
The student at the University of California in Los Angeles is a pole vaulter with a career best of 4.35 metres, which is five centimetres inside the EAA standard for Barcelona of 4.3m. Her 4.35m is also superior to the Irish record of 4.0m set last year by Zoe Brown, the Antrim native.
Yesterday, Irish team manager and former chairman of the High Performance Committee, Patsy McGonigle, welcomed the decision of Pena to declare for Ireland. "Pena will compete in the Irish Championships in Santry on Saturday week and if she hits top form she will be one of the stars of the meeting because pole vaulting is not one of our strong events," said McGonigle.
