FitzPatrick, Dunn headline Day 1 of Youth Outdoor Champs

LISLE, Ill. - The 2010 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships got off to a great start today with hammer throw, steeplechase, race walk and multi events at The Sports Complex on the campus of Benedictine University.



Steeplechase



Delaney FitzPatrick (Thunder), who competed in the Youth High Jump, Long Jump and Pentathlon at the 2009 Youth Championships, decided to try something different this year. She dropped her field events at this meet to focus on her distance running, and as a result won the Intermediate Girls' 2,000m Steeplechase (7:44.60). FitzPatrick's teammate Kathryn Pamperin finished second with a time of 7:52.87.



Sidgie Greene (Metropolis) won the Intermediate Boys' division (6:29.55), while Waverly Neer (unattached) took the Young Women's (7:10.86) and Sergio Miranda (Ssparc) took the Young Men's (6:20.16) steeplechase titles.



Racewalks



Coming off a second-place finish in the 10k Race Walk (56:58:16) at last week's USA Junior Outdoor Championships, Abby Dunn (Maine Racewalkers) led the Race Walk events with her first place finish in the Intermediate Girls' 3,000m Race Walk in 16:07.15. Dunn also placed second in the 10k Race Walk at the 2009 Junior Championships.



Alexander, Anthony and Angelo Peters (Elgin Sharks) dominated the boys race walk events. Alexander and Anthony took first and second in the Youth Boys' event with times of 17:58.70 and 20:03.15, and Angelo won the Bantam Boys with 9:39.02. Other top race walk finishers include Elizabeth Lyons (So Cal Roadrunners) - Young Women's 3,000m RW (24:32.29); Katie Michta (Walk USA)- Youth Girls 3,000m RW (17:35.08); Abbie Sise (unattached)- Midget Girls (11:35.12); and Spencer Dunn (unattached)- Midget Boys- (8:22.81).



Multis



Youth competitors Jordan Birch (unattached) and Shaina Burns (unattched) completed five events today to win the Boys' and Girls' pentathlons. Birch won with 2,550 points, and Burns finished with 2,942.



The Young Men's Decathlon and Young Women's Heptathlon competitors completed a competitive first half of their multi events today. After four events, Kanellar Carney (Continental T-Belle) is leading the Young Women's heptathlon with 2,589 points and Kendall Gustafson (Together Elite) is leading the Intermediate Girls. Erwin Jones (Phoenix Bobcats) leads the Young Men's Decathlon with 2,964 points scored in five events and Perez Ford (Ssparc) leads the Intermediate Boys' event with 3,008 points.



Hammer



Top finishers in the first field event of the meet were Bradley Bolton (South Orange) - Young Men's division (65.32m/214-3.75); Jackie Lepplemeier (unattached)- Young Women (44.21m/145-0.5); Ashlen Veatch (unattached)- Intermediate Girls (47.75m/156-8); and James Rowland (The Pride Track and Field Program) Intermediate Boys (43.80m/143-8).
