Demus runs sub-53 in Rome

Two-time World Outdoor silver medalist Lashinda Demus led wire-to-wire in winning the women's 400m hurdles in a world-leading 52.82 at the Golden Gala , the fourth stop in the IAAF's Diamond League, in Rome. Demus' time is the six-fastest ever run by an American.

Multiple-time Olympic and World Outdoor Championship medalist Jeremy Wariner was able to hold off a late-charging Angelo Taylor to win the men's 400m in a world-leading 44.73. Taylor, a two-time Olympic 400m hurdles gold medalist, crossed the line in 44.74.

2004 Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Outdoor champion Dwight Phillips won the men's long jump with a world-leading 8.42m/27-7.5 and 2008 Olympian Brian Johnson took fourth with a best mark of 8.06m/26-5.5. In the men's shot put, reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Christian Cantwell claimed victory with a meet record heave of 21.67m/71-1.25, while 2007 World Outdoor champion Reese Hoffa was third with 21.15m/69-4.75.

Double Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix ran a blistering 19.86 to win the men's 200m and break Michael Johnson's meet record from 1999. Two-time World Outdoor bronze medalist Wallace Spearmon was the runner-up in 20.05.

The women's high jump was once again a duel between reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Blanka Vlasic (CRO) and American record holder Chaunte Howard. Both women cleared 2.03m/6-8, but it was Vlasic who was named the winner on the countback.

After two false starts in the women's 100m, one by Miki Barber and one by Olympic and World champion Shelly-Ann Fraser (JAM), it was LaShaunte'a Moore who came away the winner. Former world record holder Asafa Powell won the men's 100m in a world-leading 9.82.
