Lowe named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS- Chaunte (Howard) Lowe (J.W. North High School, Riverside, CA 2002), the 2001 California State Meet high jump champion at 5-10, has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting the American record in the women's high jump Sunday at the 21st Lausitzer International Athletics Meeting in Cottbus, Germany.

A three-time USA Outdoor champion, Lowe cleared 2.04m/6-8.25 to win the women's high jump and break the 22-year old American record. The previous record of 2.03m/6-7.75 was set by Louise Ritter back in 1988. Lowe came into the competition at 1.81m/511.25 and jumped at every height in the progression. It was on her third and final attempt that Lowe was able to clear 2.04m and claim the American record.

Now in its ninth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
