FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn.– Led by redshirt junior Chris Walden and true freshman Bethan Knights, the California men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 15th and 12th, respectively, at the 29th annual Roy Griak Invitational Saturday morning at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.

Southern Utah captured the men’s team title, while Southern Utah’s Nate Jewkes won the individual crown with a time of 24:45.4. Walden was close behind with a time of 24:49.7 to place fourth overall out of more than 300 competitors in the men’s race. Redshirt freshman Yohaness Esitfanos, who won the season-opening USF Invitational on Aug. 30, finished 74th overall with a time of 26:13.4. On the women’s side, the Golden Bears placed 12th overall, paced by Knights, who was running in her first collegiate meet on Saturday. Michigan State won the team title, while Arizona State’s Shelby Houlihan won the individual crown (20:34.5).

Knights, making her collegiate debut, finished 15th overall in a field of nearly 400 competitors with a time of 21:37.7 in the 6,000. Sophomore Megan Bordes finished in a time of 22:26.7 to place 55th overall. Senior Sydney Gray posted a time of 22:51.6 to place 84th, while freshman Nuria Tio Peig completed the course in 23:15.1 to place 119th overall.

Several Golden Bears also competed individually at the Stanford Invitational with Ned Trim (84th, 25:03) leading the way on the men’s side and Molly Babcock (82nd, 22:45) pacing the women.

Cal returns to action Saturday, Oct. 18 when a select group of Golden Bears compete in the Pre-Nationals event in Terre Haute, Ind., while the rest of the squad participates in the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif.
