U.S. team features 16 USATF athletes at Youth Olympic Games

NANJING, CHINA -- A cultural and athletic experience awaits 93 U.S. athletes, including 16 from USA Track & Field, who will compete in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, which officially open Saturday, Aug. 16.
Athletes ages 15-18 from 204 countries will participate in the 13-day competition, featuring all 28 sport disciplines on the program for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Highlighting the U.S. team are sprinter Noah Lyles (Alexandria, Virginia) and thrower Hayley Showalter (Highlands Ranch, Colorado).
Lyles became the only athlete at U.S. Area Youth Olympic Trials - Track & Field to run a sub-21 time in both the windy prelim ((20.95 [+2.3]) and the wind-legal final (20.89 [+1.3]). Lyles joins his second national team after competing for Team USA at the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Showalter also gains her second taste of international competition after participating as a member of the U.S Team at IAAF World Junior Championships in July. The 16-year-old Showalter set a personal best at U.S. Youth Olympic Trials - Track & Field in Miaramar, Florida, where she surpassed her previous mark by more than a foot with a toss of 6.77m/153-5 for first place in the competition.
